Chapter 8NikephorosNepsis.1.8

The Promise of Noetic Light

The author promises a spiritual method to gain inner light and defeat enemies without bodily toil.

So then, my child, if you want to gain within yourself a lamp of your own—of noetic light and spiritual knowledge—so that you can walk unhindered through the deepest darkness of this age, and if you want your steps to be guided by the Lord so that you may intensely desire the way of the Gospel, according to the prophetic saying—that is, so that with fiery faith you may long to become a partaker of the Lord's perfect Gospel commandments, with yearning and prayer—then I will show you a wondrous method and spiritual device.✦ This does not require bodily toil or struggle; it wants spiritual labor, the mind, and careful attention helped by the fear and love of God. With this device you will easily be able to rout the phalanx of the enemies.

The Three Mighty Giants

The author instructs the disciple to find and defeat forgetfulness, listlessness, and ignorance through inward prayer and attentiveness.

So then, if you want to defeat the passions, once you have gathered yourself inward through prayer and the help of God and sunk into the depths of your heart, search until you find these three mighty giants—namely forgetfulness, listlessness, and ignorance—which are the supports of the noetic enemies, through which the other passions of wickedness also return and act and operate and grow strong in the souls of those who love pleasure.1 And once, with great attentiveness and care of the mind and with divine help, you find these things that most people don't know, you'll be able, with much attentiveness and prayer, to be saved from these three giants. For when, by active grace, the harmonious coexistence of true knowledge, remembrance of the word of God, and good readiness is sought to be established in the heart and carefully guarded, then every trace of forgetfulness, ignorance, and listlessness vanishes from it.

The Harmony of the Fathers

The author calls attention to the agreement of spiritual teachings and invites the reader to hear from other Fathers.

Do you see how the spiritual words agree? Do you see how they give clear instruction about prayer? And now pay attention to the other Fathers as well, and see what they'll tell us.
