CHAPITRE XIII.

The Rest of the Soul in God

The soul enters a state of continuous prayer by resting in the profound, internal presence of God.

1. On rest before God, present to the soul in a wonderful way. 2. The fruits of this peaceful presence. 3. Advice on how to conduct yourself in practice. 1. Once the soul reaches this point, it needs no other preparation than its own rest. For it is here that the presence of God during the day, which is the great fruit of prayer, or rather the continuation of prayer itself, begins to be infused and almost continual. The soul enjoys an inestimable happiness in its depths. It discovers that God is more present within it than it is within itself. It has only one thing to do to find Him: it must sink into itself. As soon as it closes its eyes, it finds itself taken hold of and set in prayer. It is astonished at such a great good, and an inner conversation takes place that outward things do not interrupt at all.

The Fruits of Divine Wisdom

Living in this state of prayer allows virtues to flow naturally, as if one has attained the wisdom that brings all good things.

2. Regarding this way of prayer, you can say what is said of Wisdom: (a) that all good things have come with her.1 For the virtues flow pleasantly into this soul, who practices them so easily that they seem natural to her. She has a seed of life and fruitfulness that gives her ease toward everything good, and insensibility toward everything evil.2 (a) Wisdom3 7 verse 11

Faithfulness in Simple Rest

The soul is encouraged to remain faithful to this simple rest as the most perfect disposition for all spiritual activities and sacraments.

3. So let her remain faithful in this state; and let her take great care not to look for any other disposition whatsoever than her simple rest, whether for Confession or Communion, action or prayer. There is nothing to do but let herself be filled with this divine outpouring. I am not speaking of the preparations necessary for the Sacraments, but of the most perfect interior disposition in which they can be received, which is the one I have just described.

(a) Sag. 7. v. 11.

Notes

  1. 1 ↩The printed source marker (a) points to the following citation, Sag. 7. v. 11 (Wisdom 7:11).
  2. 2 ↩insensibilité is kept as spiritual unmovedness toward evil, not emotional numbness as a defect.
  3. 3 ↩French Sag. abbreviates Sagesse, translated here as Wisdom.
