The First Three Commandments: Our Duty to God
We are called to fear, love, and trust God above all things, honoring His name and His word.
How a father should simply guide his household. The first commandment is: You shall have no other gods. What does that mean? Answer: We should fear, love, and trust God above all things. The second commandment is: You shall not misuse the name of your God. What does that mean? Answer: We should fear and love God so that we don't curse, swear, use witchcraft, lie, or deceive by His name, but instead call upon it in every trouble, pray, praise, and give thanks. The third commandment is: You shall keep the holiday holy. What does that mean? Answer: We should fear and love God, so that we don't despise preaching and His word, but keep it holy, gladly hear it, and learn from it.
The Seven Commandments: Our Duty to Our Neighbor
We are instructed to love and serve our neighbor by protecting their life, family, property, and reputation.
The fourth commandment is: Honor your father and your mother. What does this mean? Answer: We should fear and love God so that we do not despise or anger our parents and masters, but honor them, serve them, obey them, and hold them dear. The fifth commandment is: You shall not kill. What does this mean? Answer: We should fear and love God so that we don't harm or hurt our neighbor in his body, but instead help and support him in all his bodily needs. The sixth commandment is: You shall not commit adultery. What does this mean? Answer: We should fear and love God so that we lead a chaste and decent life in our words and actions, and so that everyone loves and honors their spouse. The seventh commandment is: You shall not steal. What does this mean? Answer: We should fear and love God so that we do not take our neighbor's money or goods, nor bring false merchandise or trade upon ourselves, but help improve and protect our neighbor's property and food. The eighth commandment is: You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. What does this mean? Answer: We should fear and love God so that we do not falsely lie about, betray, gossip, or slander our neighbor, but rather defend him, speak well of him, and interpret everything in the best light. The ninth commandment is: You shall not covet your neighbor's house. What does this mean? Answer: We should fear and love God so that we don't scheme to take our neighbor's inheritance or house, nor create a false appearance of right against them, but rather help them keep what is theirs and serve them well. The tenth commandment is: You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, servant, maid, cattle, or anything that belongs to him. What does this mean? Answer: We should fear and love God so that we don't entice or pressure our neighbor's wife, servant, or cattle, but instead support them in keeping what is rightfully theirs.
The Conclusion: God's Promise and Warning
God reminds us of His justice and His grace, calling us to respond with fear, love, and trust.
Conclusion of the Commandments: What does God say about all these commandments? Answer: He says: 'I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me; but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.' What is that? Answer: God threatens to punish everyone who breaks these commandments; therefore, we should fear His wrath and not act against them. He promises grace and all good things to all who keep such commandments; therefore, we should love Him, trust Him, and gladly do according to His commandments.

Wie sie ein Hausvater seinem Hause einfältig vorhalten soll. Das erste Gebot Du sollst nicht andere Götter haben. Was ist das? Antwort: Wir sollen Gott über alle Dinge fürchten, lieben und vertrauen.
Das zweite Gebot Du sollst den Namen deines Gottes nicht missbrauchen. Was ist das? Antwort: Wir sollen Gott fürchten und lieben, dass wir bei seinem Namen nicht fluchen, schwören, zaubern, lügen oder trügen, sondern denselben in allen Nöten anrufen, beten, loben und danken.
Das dritte Gebot Du sollst den Feiertag heiligen. Was ist das? Antwort: Wir sollen Gott fürchten und lieben, dass wir die Predigt und sein Wort nicht verachten, sondern dasselbe heilig halten, gerne hören und lernen.
Das vierte Gebot Du sollst deinen Vater und deine Mutter ehren. Was ist das? Antwort: Wir sollen Gott fürchten und lieben, dass wir unsere Eltern und Herren nicht verachten noch erzürnen, sondern sie in Ehren halten, ihnen dienen, gehorchen, lieb und wert haben.
Das fünfte Gebot Du sollst nicht töten. Was ist das? Antwort: Wir sollen Gott fürchten und lieben, dass wir unserm Nächsten an seinem Leibe keinen Schaden noch Leid tun, sondern ihm helfen und fördern in allen Leibesnöten.
Das sechste Gebot Du sollst nicht ehebrechen. Was ist das? Antwort: Wir sollen Gott fürchten und lieben, dass wir keusch und züchtig leben in Worten und Werken und ein jeglicher sein Gemahl liebe und ehre.
Das siebente Gebot Du sollst nicht stehlen. Was ist das? Antwort: Wir sollen Gott fürchten und lieben, dass wir unsers Nächsten Geld oder Gut nicht nehmen noch mit falscher Ware oder Handel an uns bringen, sondern ihm sein Gut und Nahrung helfen bessern und behüten.
Das achte Gebot Du sollst nicht falsch Zeugnis reden wider deinen Nächsten. Was ist das? Antwort: Wir sollen Gott fürchten und lieben, dass wir unsern Nächsten nicht fälschlich belügen, verraten, nachreden oder bösen Leumund machen, sondern sollen ihn entschuldigen, Gutes von ihm reden und alles zum Besten kehren.
Das neunte Gebot Du sollst nicht begehren deines Nächsten Haus. Was ist das? Antwort: Wir sollen Gott fürchten und lieben, dass wir unserm Nächsten nicht mit List nach seinem Erbe oder Hause stehen noch mit einem Schein des Rechts an uns bringen, sondern ihm dasselbe zu behalten förderlich und dienstlich sein.
Das zehnte Gebot Du sollst nicht begehren deines Nächsten Frau, Knecht, Magd, Vieh oder was sein ist. Was ist das? Antwort: Wir sollen Gott fürchten und lieben, dass wir unserm Nächsten nicht seine Frau, Mitarbeiter oder Vieh abspannen, abdringen oder abwendig machen, sondern dieselben anhalten, dass sie bleiben und tun, was sie schuldig sind.
Schluß der Gebote Was sagt nun Gott von diesen Geboten allen? Antwort: Er sagt also: Ich, der HERR, dein Gott, bin ein eifriger Gott, der über die, so mich hassen, die Sünde der Väter heimsucht an den Kindern bis ins dritte und vierte Glied; aber denen, so mich lieben und meine Gebote halten, tue ich wohl in tausend Glied. Was ist das? Antwort: Gott drohet zu strafen alle, die diese Gebote übertreten; darum sollen wir uns fürchten vor seinem Zorn und nicht gegen solche Gebote tun. Er verheißet aber Gnade und alles Gute allen, die solche Gebote halten; darum sollen wir ihn auch lieben und vertrauen und gerne tun nach seinen Geboten.
