Introduction to the Sacrament
Martin Luther introduces these questions as a guide for those preparing to receive the Sacrament.
Through D. Martin Luther prepared this for those who want to go to the Sacrament, along with their responses. After finishing confession and instruction on the Ten Commandments, faith, the Lord's Prayer, the words of baptism, and the Sacrament, the person confessing or someone else may ask themselves:
Examination of Conscience and Faith
A series of questions designed to lead the believer to acknowledge their sinfulness and find comfort in the person and work of Christ.
1. Do you believe that you are a sinner? Answer: Yes, I believe it; I am a sinner. 2. How do you know that? Answer: From the Ten Commandments; I haven't kept them. 3. Are you also sorry for your sins? Answer: Yes, I am sorry that I have sinned against God. 4. What have you earned with your sins before God? Answer: His wrath and displeasure, temporal death, and eternal damnation. 5. Do you also hope to be saved? Answer: Yes, I hope so. 6. What do you find comfort in? Answer: In my beloved Lord Jesus Christ. 7. Who is Christ? Answer: The Son of God, true God and man. 8. How many gods are there? Answer: There is only one; but there are three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. 9. What has Christ done for you that you find comfort in Him? Answer: He died for me and shed His blood on the cross for my forgiveness. 10. Did the Father die for you, too? Answer: No; for the Father is only God, as is the Holy Spirit. But the Son is true God and true man, who died for me and shed His blood for me. 11. How do you know that? Answer: From the holy Gospel, from the words of the Sacrament, and from His Body and Blood, which are given to me in the Sacrament as a pledge.

12. What do the words say? Answer: On the night he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take, eat; this is my body, which is given for you." Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after the meal he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins." Do this as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.
The Meaning and Purpose of the Sacrament
An exploration of the real presence of Christ's body and blood and the believer's response of remembrance and faith.
13. So, do you believe that the true Body and Blood of Christ is present in the Sacrament? Answer: Yes, I believe it. 14. What makes you believe that? Answer: The word of Christ: "Take, eat; this is my body; drink from it, all of you; this is my blood." “ 15. What should we do when we eat His body and drink His blood and take the pledge? Answer: We proclaim and remember His death and the shedding of His blood, just as He taught us: 'Do this as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me!' " 16. Why should we remember his death and proclaim it? Answer: So that we learn to believe that no creature can make amends for our sins except Christ, true God and man, and that we learn to be alarmed by our sins and to hold them in great esteem, and to find joy and comfort in him alone, and thus through this faith be saved. 17. What moved him to die for your sins and to make sufficient atonement for them? Answer: His great love for his Father, for me, and for other sinners, as it is written in John. 15:13; John. 5:8; Galatians. 2:20; Ephesians. 5:2. 18. So, why do you want to go to the Sacrament? Answer: So that I may learn to believe that Christ died out of great love for me because of my sin, as it is said, and then also learn from Him to love God and my neighbor.
Motivation and Spiritual Need
Guidance for those who struggle with spiritual dryness or lack of desire for the Sacrament, pointing them to their ongoing need for grace.
19. What should motivate a Christian to receive the Sacrament of the Altar frequently? Answer: For God's sake, both the command and promise of the Lord Christ should compel him, as well as his own need, which weighs heavily on him, for which reason such command, allurements, and promises occur. 20. What should a person do if they can't feel such distress, or if they don't have a hunger or thirst for the Sacrament? Answer: The best advice is for him to first strike his breast and feel whether he still has flesh and blood, and to believe what Scripture says about it. 5,19 ff. and Romans. 7,18. Secondly, look around to see if you're still in the world, and remember that there will be no shortage of sins and troubles, just as Scripture says. 15,18. Regarding the first, it is written: "19 and 16:20; 1 John." Regarding the second, it is written: "2:15." Regarding the third, it is written: "16 and 5:19." Regarding the third, he'll also have the devil around him, who won't give him peace, either inwardly or outwardly, day and night, with lies and murders, as the Scripture depicts in John 8:44; 1 Peter. Regarding the fifth, it is written: "5:8." Regarding the sixth, it is written: "9; Ephesians." Regarding the seventh, it is written: "6:11." Regarding the eighth, it is written: "12; 2 Timothy."
A Final Exhortation
A concluding warning to approach the Sacrament with the seriousness and reverence due to God.
2,26. Note: These questions and answers aren't child's play; they come from the venerable and devout D. Luther prescribed them for both young and old with great seriousness. Everyone should take care and treat this as a serious matter, for St. Paul writes to the Galatians in 6. He says: Don't be deceived; God is not mocked!

1. Glaubst du, dass du ein Sünder bist? Antwort: Ja, ich glaube es; ich bin ein Sünder.
2. Wie weißt du das? Antwort: Aus den zehn Geboten, die habe ich nicht gehalten.
3. Sind dir deine Sünden auch leid? Antwort: Ja, es ist mir leid, dass ich wider Gott gesündiget habe.
4. Was hast du mit deinen Sünden bei Gott verdient? Antwort: Seinen Zorn und Ungnade, zeitlichen Tod und ewige Verdammnis.
5. Hoffst du auch, selig zu werden? Antwort: Ja, ich hoffe es.
6. Wes tröstest du dich denn? Antwort: Meines lieben HErrn JEsu Christi.
7. Wer ist Christus? Antwort: Gottes Sohn, wahrer Gott und Mensch.
8. Wieviel sind Götter? Antwort: Nur einer; aber drei Personen: Vater, Sohn und Heiliger Geist.
9. Was hat denn Christus für dich getan, dass du dich sein tröstet? Antwort: Er ist für mich gestorben und hat sein Blut am Kreuz für mich vergossen zur Vergebung der Sünden.
10. Ist der Vater auch für dich gestorben? Antwort: Nein; denn der Vater ist nur Gott, der Heilige Geist auch; aber der Sohn ist wahrer Gott und wahrer Mensch, für mich gestorben und hat sein Blut für mich vergossen.
11. Wie weißt du das? Antwort: Aus dem heiligen Evangelio und aus den Worten vom Sakrament und bei seinem Leib und Blut, im Sakrament mir zum Pfande gegeben.
12. Wie lauten die Worte? Antwort: Unser HErr JEsus Christus in der Nacht, da er verraten ward, nahm er das Brot, dankte und brach's und gab's seinen Jüngern und sprach: Nehmet hin und esset; das ist mein Leib, der für euch gegeben wird. Solches tut zu meinem Gedächtnis! Desselbigengleichen nahm er auch den Kelch nach dem Abendmahl, dankte und gab ihnen den und sprach: Nehmet hin und trinket alle daraus; dieser Kelch ist das Neue Testament in meinem Blut, das für euch vergossen wird zur Vergebung der Sünden. Solches tut, sooft ihr's trinket, zu meinem Gedächtnis!
13. So glaubst du, dass im Sakrament der wahre Leib und Blut Christi sei? Antwort: Ja, ich glaube es.
14. Was bewegt dich, das zu glauben? Antwort: Das Wort Christi: Nehmet hin und esset, das ist mein Leib; trinket alle daraus, das ist mein Blut.
15. Was sollen wir tun, wenn wir seinen Leib essen und sein Blut trinken und das Pfand also nehmen? Antwort: Seinen Tod und Blutvergießen verkündigen und gedenken, wie er uns gelehret hat: Solches tut, sooft ihr's trinket, zu meinem Gedächtnis!
16. Warum sollen wir seines Todes gedenken und denselben verkündigen? Antwort: Dass wir lernen glauben, dass keine Kreatur hat können genugtuun für unsere Sünden außer Christus, wahrer Gott und Mensch, und dass wir lernen erschrecken vor unsern Sünden und dieselbigen lernen groß achten und uns sein allein freuen und trösten und also durch denselben Glauben selig werden.
17. Was hat ihn denn bewegt, für deine Sünden zu sterben und dafür genugzutun? Antwort: Die große Liebe zu seinem Vater, zu mir und andern Sündern, wie geschrieben stehet Joh. 15,13; Röm. 5,8; Gal. 2,20; Eph. 5,2.
18. Endlich aber, warum willst du zum Sakrament gehen? Antwort: Auf dass ich lerne glauben, dass Christus um meiner Sünde willen aus großer Liebe gestorben sei, wie gesagt, und danach von ihm auch lerne Gott und meinen Nächsten lieben.
19. Was soll einen Christen vermahnen und reizen, das Sakrament des Altars oft zu empfangen? Antwort: Von Gottes wegen soll ihn beide des HErrn Christi Gebot und Verheißung, danach auch seine eigene Not, so ihm auf dem Halse lieget, treiben, um welcher willen solch Gebieten, Locken und Verheißung geschieht.
20. Was soll aber ein Mensch tun, wenn er solche Not nicht fühlen kann oder keinen Hunger noch Durst des Sakraments empfindet? Antwort: Dem kann nicht besser geraten werden, denn dass er sich zuerst an seine Brust schlage und fühle, ob er auch noch Fleisch und Blut habe, und glaube doch der Schrift, was sie davon saget Gal. 5,19 ff. und Röm. 7,18. Zum andern, dass er um sich sehe, ob er auch noch in der Welt sei, und denke, dass es an Sünden und Not nicht fehlen werde, wie die Schrift saget Joh. 15,18.
19 und 16,20; 1 Joh. 2,15. 16 und 5,19. Zum dritten, so wird er ja auch den Teufel um sich haben, der ihm mit Lügen und Morden Tag und Nacht keinen Frieden innerlich und äußerlich lassen wird, wie ihn die Schrift abmalet Joh 8,44; 1 Petr. 5,8. 9; Eph. 6,11. 12; 2 Tim.
2,26. Nota: Diese Fragestücke und Antworten sind kein Kinderspiel, sondern von dem ehrwürdigen und frommen D. Luther für die Jungen und Alten aus einem großen Ernst vorgeschrieben. Ein jeder sehe sich wohl vor und lasse es sich auch einen rechten Ernst sein; denn St. Paulus zu den Galatern am 6. spricht: Irret euch nicht, Gott lässt sich nicht spotten!
