The Heavenly Visitation and Healing

During a severe illness, Saint Seraphim receives a vision of the Mother of God who declares him to be of Her kindred, leading to his miraculous healing and renewed spiritual strength.

While all this was going on, someone suddenly cried out: "Father Superior is coming! Father Superior is coming!" At that moment, Fr. Seraphim fell asleep; his sleep was brief, light, and pleasant.1 In the dream he saw a wondrous vision: the Most Holy Mother of God was coming toward him from the right side of the bed, clothed in royal purple and surrounded by glory. Following Her were the holy Apostles Peter and John the Theologian. Stopping at the sickbed, the Most Holy Virgin pointed to the sick man with the finger of Her right hand and, turning Her Most Pure Face toward where the doctors stood, said: "Why are you laboring?"2 Then again, turning Her face toward the elder, She said: "This one is of Our kindred"—and the vision ended, which those present did not suspect.3 When the superior came in, the sick man came to again. Father Isaiah, with deep love and concern, urged him to take the doctors' advice and help. But the sick man, after so much care had been given him, and in the desperate state of his health, to everyone's surprise answered that he no longer wanted help from people, asking the father superior to commit his life to God and the Most Holy Mother of God, the True and Faithful Physicians of souls and bodies.4 There was nothing to be done; they left the elder in peace, respecting his patience and marveling at the strength and firmness of his faith. As for him, from that wondrous visitation he was filled with joy beyond words, and this heavenly joy lasted about four hours. Then the elder grew calm and returned to his ordinary state, feeling relief from the illness; strength and vigor began to come back to him; he got up from his bed, began to walk a little around his cell, and in the evening, at the ninth hour, he took some food—a little bread and white sauerkraut.5 From that same day he began once more, little by little, to give himself to spiritual labors.

The Stoop as a Crown of Victory

Saint Seraphim's stooped posture, resulting from a tree accident and the robbers' attack, becomes a lifelong sign of his victory over the devil.

Even earlier, Father. Seraphim, while working in the forest one day, was crushed by a tree while felling it, and from that accident he lost his natural uprightness and bearing and became stooped. After the robbers' attack, from the beatings, wounds, and illness, his stoop became even worse. From that time on he began to walk leaning on a hatchet, a hoe, or a stick. So this stoop, this wounding in the heel, served all his life as the crown of the great ascetic's victory over the devil.6

Return to the Wilderness

After recovering, Saint Seraphim insists on returning to his wilderness cell despite the abbot's concerns, demonstrating his fearless devotion to the eremitic life.

From the day he fell ill, Elder Seraphim spent about five months in the monastery without visiting his wilderness hermitage. When his health returned and he felt strong enough for the hermit's life again, he asked Abbot Isaiah to let him return to the wilderness. The abbot, however, urged by the brothers and feeling sincere pity for the elder, tried to persuade him to stay in the monastery permanently, pointing out that similar terrible misfortunes could happen again.7 Father Seraphim answered that he counted such attacks as nothing and was ready, imitating the holy8 martyrs who suffered for the Lord's name, to endure even to death every insult that might come.✦✦ Yielding to that Christian fearlessness of spirit and love for hermit life, Fr.9 Isaiah blessed the elder's wish, and Elder Seraphim returned once more to his wilderness cell.

Forgiveness of the Attackers

Saint Seraphim forgives the peasants who beat him and intercedes for them, leaving vengeance to God, who sends a fire that brings them to repentance.

With the elder's new settlement in the wilderness, the devil suffered a most complete defeat. The peasants who had beaten the elder were found; they turned out to be serfs of the landowner Tatishchev, of Ardatov District, from the village of Kremenki. But Fr. Seraphim not only forgave them themselves, but also pleaded with the monastery's superior not to exact anything from them, and then wrote the same request to the landowner.10 Everyone was so outraged by these peasants' deed that it seemed impossible to forgive them, but Fr. Seraphim insisted on his point: "Otherwise," the elder said, "I'll leave the Sarov monastery and go away somewhere else." And to the Superior, Fr.11 Isaiah, his confessor, he said that it would be better if they removed him from the monastery than inflicted any punishment on the peasants. Father Seraphim left vengeance to the Lord God.12 The wrath of God did indeed overtake these peasants: before long a fire destroyed their homes. Then they came themselves to ask of Father Seraphim, with tears of repentance, for forgiveness and his holy prayers.

The Abbot's Succession

Abbot Isaiah resigns due to old age, and Saint Seraphim twice refuses the abbacy out of humility, leading to the election of Elder Niphont.

Elder Fr. Isaiah greatly honored and loved Fr. Seraphim, and he also treasured his conversations; so when he was fresh, alert, and enjoying good health, he often went himself into the wilderness to Fr. Seraphim. In 1806, due to old age and the labors he had undertaken for the salvation of himself and the brothers, Isaiah's health grew especially weak, and at his own request he resigned from the duty and title of abbot. The lot of taking his place in the monastery, by the common wish of the brothers, fell on Fr. Seraphim. This was already the second time the elder was chosen for positions of authority among the monasteries, but this time too, out of his humility and from his extreme love for the wilderness, he refused the honor offered him. Then, by the voice of the whole brotherhood, Elder Niphont was elected abbot; until then he had been fulfilling the obedience of treasurer.
