Foreknowledge and Farewell

The elder foretells his death, visits the church for the last time, and bids farewell to the brethren.

Half a year before his death, Fr. Seraphim, taking leave of many, would say with firm resolve: "We will not see each other again." Some asked his blessing to come during Great Lent, keep the fast at Sarov, and once more enjoy seeing him and speaking with him. "Then my doors will be shut," the elder answered to this, "you will not see me." It became very noticeable that the life of Fr. Seraphim was fading; only his spirit remained watchful as before—and even more than before. "My life is shortening," he would say to some among the brethren, "in spirit I am as if just born, but in body I am dead in every way." On Sunday, January 1, 1833, Fr. Seraphim came for the last time to the hospital church dedicated to Sts. Zosima and Savvaty; he himself lit candles before all the icons and venerated them, something they hadn't noticed him do before; then, as was his custom, he received Holy1 Mysteries of Christ.2 When the liturgy was over, he took leave of all the brothers who had been praying there, blessed them all, kissed them, and, comforting them, said: "Work out your salvation, don't lose heart, keep watch: crowns are being prepared for us today." Having taken leave of everyone, he venerated the cross and the icon of the Mother of God; then, having gone around the holy altar, he made the customary bow and left the church by the north doors, as if signifying by this that a person enters this world by one gate, the way of birth, and by another, that3 is.4 through the gates of death, he leaves it. At that time everyone noticed how utterly spent his bodily strength was; yet in spirit the elder was alert, calm, and cheerful.

Provision and Prophecy

The elder sends money to the Diveyevo sisters and prophesies that his death will be revealed by fire.

After the liturgy, Sister Irina Vasilyevna from the Diveyevo community was with him. The elder sent 200 rubles with her to Paraskeva Ivanovna. It was in assignats.5 He charged her to buy bread in the nearby village with this money, for by then the whole store had run out, and the sisters were in great need. Elder Seraphim had a custom: when he left the monastery for the desert hermitage, he would leave the candles burning in his cell—the ones that had been lit that morning before the icons. Brother Pavel, taking advantage of the elder's kindness toward him, would sometimes tell him that a fire might start from the lit candles; but Fr. Seraphim always answered: "As long as I'm alive, there won't be a fire; but when I die, my death will be made known by a fire." And that's exactly what happened.

The Passing of the Elder

On the day of his death, the elder visits his burial site, sings Paschal hymns, and the next morning is found dead in prayer after a smoke discovery.

On the first day of 1833, Brother Pavel noticed that Fr.6 went out about three times that day to the spot marked for his burial, where he stayed for a long while, looking at the ground. That evening, Fr.7 Pavel heard the elder singing Paschal hymns in his cell. On the second of January, around six in the morning, Brother Pavel, leaving his cell for the early Liturgy, smelled in the entryway near Fr. Seraphim's cell the smell of smoke. Having said the usual prayer, he knocked on Fr. Seraphim's door, but the door was latched from inside with a hook, and no answer came to the prayer. He went out onto the porch and, noticing in the darkness the monks going to church, said to them: "Fathers and brothers! There's a strong smell of smoke. Isn't something burning near us? The elder must have gone off to the wilderness." Then one of those passing by, the novice Anikita, rushed to Fr. Seraphim's cell and, sensing that it was locked, tore the door off the inner hook with a hard shove. Many Christians, out of zeal, would bring to Fr. Seraphim various linen articles.8 These things, together with books, were lying this time in disorder on the bench near the door. It was these that were smoldering, probably from candle snuff or from a fallen candle whose candlestick stood right there.9 There was no fire; only the things and some of the books were smoldering. Outside it was dark, just barely dawning; in Fr. There was no light in Fr. Seraphim's cell, and the elder himself could neither be seen nor heard.10 They assumed he was resting from his nighttime ascetic labors, and with that in mind, those who had come crowded around the cell. A slight commotion broke out in the entryway. Some of the brethren rushed for snow and put out the smoldering items. Meanwhile, the early Liturgy continued without interruption, in its usual order, in the hospital church. They were singing "It Is Truly Meet."11 . . Just then a boy, one of the novices, unexpectedly ran into the church and quietly told some of them what had happened. The brethren hurried to the cell of Fr.12 Seraphim.13 Quite a few monks gathered. Brother Pavel and the novice Anikita, wanting to make sure the elder wasn't resting, began feeling their way in the dark through the small space of his cell and found him himself, kneeling in prayer with his arms crossed. He was dead.

Burial and Veneration

The elder's body is prepared for burial and lies in state for eight days, visited by thousands of mourners.

After the Liturgy, Fr.14 Seraphim was placed in the coffin, according to his will, with an enamel image of the Venerable.15 Sergius, received from the Trinity-Sergius Lavra. They prepared a grave for the blessed elder in the exact spot he had long marked out, and for eight days his body lay in state in the Dormition Cathedral. Until the day of burial, the Sarov Hermitage was filled with thousands of people who had gathered from the surrounding regions and provinces. Everyone pressed forward, competing with one another to kiss the great elder. Everyone mourned his loss together and prayed for the repose of his soul, just as he, during his lifetime, had prayed for the health and salvation of all. On the day of the burial, during the Liturgy, there were so many people in the cathedral that the candles near the coffin went out because of the heat.

Signs and Burial Details

A vision of the elder's soul ascending, a miracle of the hand opening, and the final interment with a monument.

At that time, Hieromonk Philaret was living an ascetic life at the Glinsk monastery in the Kursk province. His disciple reported that on January 2nd, as he was leaving church after Matins, Father Philaret pointed to an extraordinary light in the sky and said, "Look—that is how the souls of the righteous ascend to heaven!" That is Father Seraphim's soul ascending!" Archimandrite Mitrofan, who served as sacristan at the Nevsky Lavra, had been a novice at the Sarov Hermitage and was present at the coffin of Fr. Seraphim. He told the Diveyevo orphans that he had personally witnessed a miracle: when the confessor wanted to place the prayer of absolution in Fr.1617 Seraphim's hand, the hand opened on its own. The abbot, the treasurer, and others saw this and remained bewildered for a long time, struck by what had happened. The burial of Fr. Seraphim was performed by Fr. Abbot Niphont.18 His body was committed to the earth on the right side of the cathedral altar, beside the grave of Mark the recluse. (Later, through the zeal of the Nizhny Novgorod merchant Ya. Syrev, a cast-iron monument in the form of a tomb was erected over his grave, on which is written: he lived to the glory of God 73 years, 5 months, and 12 days).
