The Three Ranks of the Saved

Father Seraphim reveals the three ranks of the saved in his community and teaches that obedience is above fasting and prayer.

Grace-filled Sister Evdokia Efremovna, who was considered worthy to be present at the next visitation of the Queen of Heaven by Father1 Seraphim, in 1831, related her conversation with Batiushka about that same visitation which Father23 Vasily: "See, Mother," Father Seraphim said to me, "as many as a thousand people will gather in my community, and all of them, Mother, all will be saved. I, the poor one, pleaded with the Mother of God, and the Queen of Heaven consented to the humble request of poor Seraphim. Except for three, the Merciful Lady promised to save them all—all of them, my joy!" "Only there, Mother," Father continued after a brief pause, "there in the future, all will be divided into three ranks: the united ones, who by their purity, by their unceasing prayers and their works, and through that with their whole being, are united to the Lord; all their life and breath is in God, and they will be with Him forever!4 "The chosen ones, who will do my works, Mother, and will be with me in my community." "And the called ones, who will only eat our bread for a time—for whom there is a dark place."5 "They'll be given only a little cot; they'll be in nothing but little shirts, and they'll always pine and grieve!" "These are the careless and lazy ones, Mother, who don't keep the common work and obedience and are busy only with their own affairs; how dark and heavy it will be for them!" "They'll sit rocking from side to side in one place!" And taking me by the hand, Father wept bitterly. "Obedience, mother, obedience is above fasting and prayer!" Father went on. "I'm telling you, there's nothing higher than obedience, mother, and you tell that to everyone!" Then, after blessing me, he let me go."

The Preparation for the Visitation

A year and nine months before his repose, Father Seraphim prepares Sister Evdokia for the great feast of the Annunciation through prayer and the reading of akathists.

A year and nine months before his death, Father.6 Seraphim was again granted a visitation from the Mother of God. The visitation took place early in the morning, on the day of the Annunciation, March 25, 1831. It was written down and recounted in detail by the remarkable eldress Evdokia Efremovna (later Mother Eupraxia).7 In the last year of Father Seraphim's life, I came to him one evening at his command, on the eve of the feast of the Annunciation of the Mother of God. Father met me and said, "Ah, my joy, I've been waiting for you a long time! What mercy and grace from the Mother of God are being prepared for you and me on this feast! This day will be great for us!" "Am I worthy, Father, to receive grace, given my sins?"8 I answered. But Father ordered, "Repeat, Mother, several times in a row: 'Rejoice, O Bride Unwedded!9 Alleluia!'" Then he began to say: "And we've never even heard of such a feast as awaits you and me!" I started to cry.10 . . I say that I'm unworthy, but Father didn't give any order—he began to comfort me, saying: "Even though you are unworthy, I have asked the Lord and the Mother of God for you, that you might see this joy!"11 Come, let's pray!" Then he took off his mantle and put it on me, and began to read the akathists: to the Lord Jesus, to the Mother of God, to Saint Nicholas, to John the Baptist; and the canons: to the Guardian Angel, to all the saints.12 After reading all this, he says to me: "Do not be afraid, do not be terrified—the grace of God is appearing to us!"

The Vision of the Mother of God

Sister Evdokia witnesses the appearance of the Queen of Heaven with angels and holy virgins, and learns the names of the virgins before the vision ends.

Hold on to me tightly!" And suddenly there came a noise like the wind; a shining light appeared, and singing was heard. I couldn't see and hear all this without trembling. Father fell to his knees and, lifting his hands toward heaven, cried out: "O Most Blessed, Most Pure Virgin, Lady Mother of God!"13 And I see two Angels walking ahead with branches in their hands, and behind them Our Lady Herself. Behind the Mother of God walked twelve virgins, and then also St.14 John the Forerunner and John the Theologian.15 I fell to the ground as if dead from fear, and I don't know how long I was in that state, or what the Queen of Heaven deigned to say to Father Seraphim. I also heard nothing of what Father asked of the Lady. Toward the end of the vision, as I lay on the floor, I heard that the Mother of God was pleased to ask Father Seraphim: "Who is that lying on the ground with you?"16 Father answered: "This is that same elderly woman about whom I asked You, Lady, that she might be present at Your appearing!"17 Then the Most Pure One was pleased to take me, unworthy as I am, by the right hand, and Father by the left, and through Father she commanded me to go up to the virgins who had come with Her and ask what their names were and what their life on earth had been. So I went along the row asking. First I go up to the angels and ask: Who are you? They answer: We are Angels of God. Then I went up to John the Baptist; he likewise told me his name and his life in brief; and so likewise did St.18 John the Theologian. I went up to the virgins and asked each of them her name; they told me about their life.19 The holy virgins by name were: the great-martyrs Barbara and Catherine, St. the first martyr Thecla, St. the great-martyr Marina, St. the great-martyr and queen Irene, the venerable Eupraxia, St. the great-martyrs Pelagia and Dorothea, the venerable Macrina, the martyr Justina, St. the great-martyr Juliana and the martyr Anysia. When I had asked them all, I thought: I'll go fall at the feet of the Queen of Heaven and beg forgiveness for my sins—but suddenly everything became invisible. Afterwards Father said that this vision had lasted four hours.
