Manturov's Sacrificial Obedience
Mikhail Manturov, by Father Seraphim's blessing, sells his estate, frees his serfs, buys land in Diveyevo, and endures poverty and mockery with humble obedience, becoming the elder's most faithful disciple and steward.
By the blessing of Batyushka Fr. Seraphim, Mikhail Vasilyevich Manturov sold his estate, set his serfs free, and, keeping the money for the time being, bought only fifteen desyatins of land in Diveyevo at the place indicated to him by Fr.✦1 Seraphim, with the strictest commandment: to keep this land, never sell it, give it to no one, and after his death bequeath it to Seraphim's monastery. On this land Mikhail Vasilyevich settled with his wife and began to suffer want. He endured a great deal of mockery from acquaintances and friends, as well as reproaches from his wife, Anna Mikhailovna, a Lutheran, a young woman altogether unprepared for spiritual labors, who could not bear poverty and was of a very impatient and hot-tempered character, though, on the whole, a good and honest person. All his life the remarkable Mikhail Vasilyevich Manturov, a true disciple of Christ, endured humiliation for his Gospel deed. But he bore it all without complaint—silently, patiently, humbly, meekly, and with good cheer—out of his love and extraordinary faith in the holy elder, obeying him in everything without question, not taking a step without his blessing, as if he had entrusted his whole self and his whole life into the hands of Fr. Seraphim. It's no wonder that Mikhail Vasilyevich became the most faithful disciple of Father Seraphim and his closest, most beloved friend. Batyushka Father2 Seraphim, whenever he spoke of him to anyone at all, never called him anything but "Mishenka," and he entrusted everything concerning the organization of Diveyevo to him alone; as a result, everyone knew this and held Manturov in sacred honor, obeying him in everything without question, as if he were Batyushka's own steward.
Seraphim's Growing Ministry
After healing Manturov, Father Seraphim begins receiving visitors and caring for the Diveyevo community while still in seclusion, until he seeks the Lord's blessing to end it.
Father. Seraphim, after the healing of M. V. Manturov, began to receive other visitors and, true to the promise given to Father. Pachomius did not forget the Diveyevo community. He sent some of the novices to the superior, Ksenia Mikhailovna, and, praying for them every day, received revelations about the future of this community. For fifteen years, Father Seraphim received visitors in his monastic cell,3 yet he still did not leave his seclusion and went nowhere. But in 1825, he began to ask the Lord for a blessing to end his seclusion.
The Mother of God Appears
On November 25, 1825, the Mother of God appears to Father Seraphim in a vision and permits him to leave his seclusion and visit the hermitage.
On November 25, 1825, the feast day of Saint Clement, Pope of Rome, and of Peter of Alexandria, the Mother of God appeared to Fr. Seraphim in a dream vision, accompanied by these saints. Seraphim and permitted him to leave his seclusion and visit the hermitage.
The Little Community's Struggle
Father Seraphim begins guiding the Diveyevo sisters, but the superior Ksenia Mikhailovna resists his request to lighten the community's rule, leading Seraphim to step back and trust in God's timing.
As is well known, from 1825 on, Father Seraphim people began coming for a blessing—first the sisters, and then the virtuous superior of the Diveyevo community herself, Ksenia Mikhailovna, whom Batyushka called "a pillar of fire from earth to heaven" and "a spiritual rasp." Of course, the elder Ksenia Mikhailovna deeply respected and highly revered Father Seraphim, yet she would not agree to change the rule of her community, which seemed heavy both to Father Seraphim and to all the sisters seeking salvation in the community. The number of sisters in the little community had grown so much that their holdings needed to be expanded; but that was impossible in either direction. Batyushka Father Seraphim, having called Ksenia Mikhailovna to himself, began urging her to replace the heavy Sarov rule with a lighter one, but she would not even hear of it. "Listen to me, my joy!" — said Father Seraphim — but the unshakeable elder finally answered him: "No, Father, let it stay as it was; Father Builder Pachomius has already arranged things for us!"4 Then Father Seraphim dismissed the head of the little Diveyevo community, reassured that what the great elder Mother Alexandra had enjoined on him no longer lay on his conscience — or else that the hour of God's will for it had not yet come. For a time Father Seraphim did not interfere in the affairs of the little community, and only, by the gift of foreknowledge, sent sisters chosen by the Mother of God to live in Diveyevo, saying: "Go, child, to the little community here nearby — that of Mother Agafia Semyonovna Melgunova, the colonel's wife — to the great handmaid of God and pillar, Mother Ksenia Mikhailovna; she will teach you everything!"5
The Founding Vision
Father Seraphim recounts how the Mother of God appeared to him again, commanded him to establish a new monastery in Diveyevo with a unique rule, and promised her perpetual protection and healing waters.
In the notes of N. A. Motovilov concerning the founding of the Mill Convent of Father,6 Seraphim, it is said: "When, in the year 1825, on the 25th of November, the feast of the holy servants of God Clement, Pope of Rome, and Peter of Alexandria—as Father Seraphim himself repeatedly used to tell me in person, and many others as well—making his way as usual through the thickets of the forest along the bank of the Sarovka River toward his distant hermitage, he saw, below the place where the Theologian's well once stood, and almost near the bank of the Sarovka, the Mother of God, who appeared to him there (where his well now stands, and where at that time there was only a bog), and farther on and behind Her, on a little rise, two Apostles: Peter the Foremost and the Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian. And the Mother of God, striking the ground with Her staff so that a spring of clear water burst up from the earth like a fountain, said to him: "Why do you want to abandon the commandment of My handmaid Agathia—the nun Alexandra?7 Leave Xenia and her sisters alone, but do not abandon this commandment of My handmaid—strive rather to fulfill it completely, for she gave it to you by My will. But I will show you another place, also in the village of Diveyevo, and there establish this monastery of Mine that I have promised. And in memory of the promise I made to her, take from the place of her repose, from Xenia's community, eight sisters." And She told him by name exactly which ones to take, and She pointed out the place to the east, at the far end of the village of Diveyevo, opposite the altar of the church of Her Kazan Appearance, which had been built by the nun Alexandra. And She showed him how to enclose this place with a ditch and an embankment; and from these eight sisters She commanded him to begin this monastery—Her fourth universal lot on earth—for which She ordered him first to cut timber from the Sarov forest and build a windmill with two mill runs and the first cells, and later, in due time, to erect for this monastery a two-altar church in honor of Her Nativity and that of Her Only-Begotten Son, attaching it to the porch of the church of Her Kazan Appearance built by the Diveyevo nun Alexandra.8 And She Herself gave him for this monastery a new rule that until then had never existed in any monastery anywhere. And as an unalterable rule She laid down the commandment that not a single widow should dare to be received into this convent, but that he—and always afterward—should receive only maidens, and only those for whose reception She Herself would express Her favor; and She promised Herself to be the everlasting Abbess of this convent of Hers, pouring out upon it all Her mercies and all the graces of God, the blessings from all Her three former lots: Iberia, Athos, and Kiev.9 And as for the place where Her Most Pure feet had stood—where a spring had burst forth at the stroke of Her staff and received healing power, a spot commemorated for later generations by the digging of a well—She promised to give its waters a greater blessing of Hers than the waters of Bethesda in Jerusalem once had.
