Entry to the Monastery

Father Seraphim enters the Sarov Hermitage on the eve of the Entry of the Theotokos and is placed under obedience to the elder hieromonk Joseph.

Father1 Seraphim entered the Sarov Hermitage in 1778, on November 20, on the eve of the Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple, and was placed in obedience under the elder hieromonk Joseph.

Godly Parents and a Church Built in Faith

Isidore Moshnin, a wealthy and devout merchant, begins building the St. Sergius Church; after his death, his wife Agafia completes the work with piety and mercy.

His homeland was the provincial city of Kursk, where his father, Isidore Moshnin, owned brick factories and worked as a contractor, building stone buildings, churches, and houses. Isidore Moshnin was known as an exceptionally honest man, devoted to the churches of God, and a wealthy, distinguished merchant. Ten years before his death, he undertook to build a new church in Kursk dedicated to St. Sergius, according to a plan by the famous architect Rastrelli.2 Later, in 1833, this church was made a cathedral. The foundation of the church was laid in 1752, and when the lower church, with its altar dedicated to St. Sergius, was finished in 1762, the devout builder—the father of the great elder Seraphim, founder of the Diveyevo Monastery—died.3 Having left his entire fortune to his kind and intelligent wife, Agafia, he entrusted her with bringing the building of the church to completion. The mother of Fr.4 Seraphim was even more devout and merciful than his father: she helped the poor a great deal, especially orphans and impoverished brides. For many years Agafia Moshnina continued the building of the Church of St. Sergius and personally supervised the workers. In 1778 the church was finally finished, and the work had been done so well and conscientiously that the Moshnin family gained special respect among the people of Kursk.

Birth and Miraculous Preservation

Prokhor is born, raised by his devout mother, and miraculously preserved unharmed after falling from a bell tower, revealing God's special care.

Father Seraphim was born on July 19, 1759, and was named Prokhor. When his father died, Prokhor was no more than three years old, so he was raised entirely by his God-loving, kind, and wise mother, who taught him chiefly by the example of her own life, spent in prayer, visiting churches, and helping the poor. That Prokhor was God's chosen one from his birth — this was seen by all spiritually mature people, and his devout mother could not help but sense it too. So one day, while inspecting the construction of St. Sergius Church, Agafia Moshnina was walking with her seven-year-old Prokhor and, without noticing, reached the very top of the bell tower then under construction. Suddenly stepping away from his mother, the quick boy leaned out over the railing to look down and, through carelessness, fell to the ground. His terrified mother rushed down from the bell tower in a dreadful state, imagining she would find her son smashed to death — but, to her inexpressible joy and greatest astonishment, she saw him whole and unharmed. The child was standing on his feet. In tears, the mother thanked God for saving her son and understood that her son Prokhor was kept under the special care of God's Providence.

Healing Through the Theotokos

Prokhor's serious illness is healed after a vision of the Mother of God and being brought before the wonderworking Icon of the Sign, after which he returns to his studies with renewed zeal.

Three years later, a new event made God's protection over Prokhor clearly evident. He turned ten, and he stood out for his sturdy build, sharp mind, and quick memory, and, at the same time, for his meekness and humility. They began teaching him church literacy, and Prokhor took to it eagerly, but he suddenly fell seriously ill, and even those at home no longer hoped he would recover.5 At the hardest point of his illness, in a dream vision, Prokhor saw the Most Holy Theotokos, who promised to visit him and heal him of the sickness. When he woke, he told this vision to his mother. Indeed, soon afterward, in one of the processions of the Cross, they were carrying through the city of Kursk the wonderworking Icon of the Sign of the Mother of God along the street where Moshnina's house stood. A heavy rain began to fall. To get across to another street, the procession of the Cross—probably to shorten the way and avoid the mud—turned through Moshnina's courtyard. Seizing the opportunity, Agafia carried her sick son out into the yard, pressed him against the wonder-working icon, and brought him under its blessing.6 People noticed that from that time on, Prokhor began to improve, and he soon recovered completely. In this way, the Queen of Heaven's promise to visit the boy and heal him was fulfilled. Once his health was restored, Prokhor continued his studies successfully: he studied the Book of Hours and the Psalter, learned to write, and grew to love reading the Bible and spiritual books.

A Heart Set Apart

Prokhor's disinterest in commerce, his devotion to church services, his friendship with a fool for Christ, and his mother's encouragement all confirm his calling to the spiritual life.

Prokhor's older brother, Alexei, was in trade and had his own shop in Kursk, so young Prokhor was made to learn the business in that shop; but his heart wasn't drawn to trading or to profits. Young Prokhor hardly let a day go by without visiting God's church, and because he couldn't be at the late liturgy and vespers on account of his work in the shop, he got up earlier than the others and hurried to matins and the early Divine Liturgy.7 At that time in the city of8 In Kursk there lived a certain fool for Christ's sake, whose name is now forgotten, but whom everyone honored then.✦910 Prokhor got to know him and clung to the holy fool with all his heart; the latter, for his part, came to love Prokhor and by his influence inclined Prokhor's soul still more toward piety and a solitary life. His wise mother noticed everything and rejoiced in her soul that her son was so close to the Lord. Prokhor too was granted the rare happiness of having such a mother and teacher, who did not hinder but helped his desire to choose the spiritual life for himself.11
