LXII. De poenis purgatoriis ob tristitiam saeculi

LXII. De poenis purgatoriis ob tristitiam saeculi

And I saw a dry and waterless place, full of worms and surrounded by darkness, where the souls of those were who, while they were in their bodies, had drawn to themselves the sadness of the world. And the evil spirits tormented those souls in that place with fiery whips, shouting, "Why didn't you place your trust in your God?" Because they had not thrived in the joy of the heavenly beings, but had imposed upon themselves the sadness of the world due to their worldly failures, they remained in that same place; and because they had done this in the bitterness of their hearts, they endured the torment of the aforementioned worms; and because they had neglected the true and unending happiness, they suffered the opposition of the darkness around them; and since they were ensnared by these evils, they did not trust in God, and were tormented by evil spirits, as has been stated.
