I also saw deep pits that were filled with burning pitch and sulfur, and around them lay frogs and scorpions; these creatures caused terror to those who were being tormented in the same pit, yet they did not harm them. For the souls of those who had killed themselves in a reckless attempt to avoid being killed were in this pit, and because of the murder they had committed, they were suffering its fiery torment; and due to the assault in which they had been uncontrollable, they were being soaked in pitch; and because of the anger they had inflicted upon others in their killing, they were being tormented with sulfur. But because they hurried to prevent themselves from being ambushed, saying in their hearts, "I will kill you before you can kill me," they suffered torment from scorpions; and because they did this in the bitterness of their hearts, they endured horror from frogs.

Vidi quoque foveara latara et profundara, quae fervente pice et sulphure plena erat, et circa quara ranae et scorpiones jacebant; qui aniraabus, quae in eadem fovea torquebantur, terrorera incutiebant, nec taraen eas laedebant.
Nam animae illorum, qui se invadentes conatu raagno occiderant, ne occiderentur, in hac fovea fuerunt, et ob horaicidiura quod hoc raodo perpetraverant, fervorera ejus sustinebant; et ob impetura in quo in illo incontinentes erant, pice inficiebantur; et ob indignationera quara illis in occisione intulerunt, sulphure torquebantur.
Sed et quia se incursantes praevenire insidiis festinaverant, in cordibus suis dicentes: « Ego te occidara, antequara a te occidi patiar», tiraorem a scorpionibus babebant; et quia hoc in amaritudine cordium suorum fecerant, horrorem a ranis sustinebant.
