LXXXI. De amore saeculi
The love of the world does not fear God, nor does it love Him; instead, it gathers everything that pleases itself and boldly excuses everything it desires in creation before God, claiming that all these things were created for its own use. Therefore, he does not fear God, whom he ought to fear, but has his own will instead of God's; nor does he even love God, because he does not abandon his carnal desires, nor does he imprison himself for the love of God, but embraces the world with all his desire. On the other hand, Solomon, filled with the spirit of wisdom, speaks of this love, saying:

Amor autem saecuii Deum non timet, nec diligit, sed omnia quae sibimet placent, ad se colligit, et unamquamque rem quam in creaturis affectat, audacter coram Deo excusat, dicens ea ad usum suum esse creata.
Unde et Deum quem timere debuit, non timet, sed propriam voluntatem pro Deo habuit; nec etiam Deum diligit, quia carnalia desideria non relinquit, nec propter caritatem Dei se incarcerat, sed toto desiderio saeculum amplectitur.
