The Necessity of Conversion

The author addresses whether a painful conversion experience is mandatory for every Christian, distinguishing between those who grow in grace and those who must break from past sins.

Here begin the answers to the difficulties that have been raised. Does a truly Christian life begin for everyone with the kind of painful break that is depicted in the struggle with sin? And is it really true that anyone who hasn't gone through such a break hasn't yet begun to live as a Christian? No, not for everyone. Those who have kept the grace of baptism in all its purity don't experience such a break. But even for them, there must be a specific moment when they consciously begin the Christian life. It is precisely that moment when they consciously begin to count as binding on themselves that order of life in which they had lived from childhood by the command of those who raised them, by imitation, and by habit.1 There is no painful break in this at all, because once they are convinced that they must be Christians for their own good and have resolved to do so, they find everything necessary for a Christian life already prepared, both within and around them.2 That is, their ideas, feelings, and dispositions, as well as the outward order of their lives, their character, and their rules, had all been shaped up to that point according to the spirit of Christ. Nothing new is added for them, except that from this point on, they begin to do out of a sense of duty everything they had previously done only by custom and imitation. Blessed are these souls! But how rare they are! For the most part, people who realize they need to be saved find a great deal in themselves and their way of life that leads not to salvation but to ruin—that is, i.e.,3 either wrong notions, bad feelings and dispositions, passionate habits, foul ties, and so on. And so on. For such people, once they resolve to live as Christians, there's no escaping a painful break; they can't help but feel God's wrath for willfully insulting His majesty, and they must tear their heart away from what used to delight it to turn toward what seems altogether unpleasant. The more passionate habits and feelings a person has, and the longer they've lived in them, the more pain and difficulty the soul meets in turning to God. The Struggle with Sin depicts the conversion of a great sinner.

The Danger of Externalism

A warning against the 'foolish virgins' who maintain an outward appearance of piety while neglecting the inner life of the heart.

There's still a third class of people who, by the outward order of their lives, are perfect Christians, yet inside them—who knows what. People like that don't think they need to change anything in themselves, and they stay just as they are. Meanwhile, their condition is poor. These are the foolish virgins! On the outside they too have lamps, as they should, but inside it's empty: no oil, and no wick.4 God, deliver us from this! And so these people, never having gone through a painful break, count themselves among the Christians who please God!5 But there is a great difference between them and the first group. Those had—and still remember—a moment when they consciously took Christ's good yoke upon themselves, or counted as binding on themselves what they had previously kept only by habit, both because of how significant that time was in their life and especially because of that particularly blessed state the soul then experiences.✦ But others never had that and don't remember it; they live by habit, just as they've always lived. And even that might still not be so bad; but the real trouble is that, stopping at the mere outer form of a saving Christian life, they never go inside to look at what's in the heart and mind, and they let every kind of uncleanness and foulness grow there; they freeze, as it were, on the outside. But the main thing is this: thinking themselves righteous, they categorize everyone else as sinners—especially those who don't give their holiness its due; so suspicion and gossip, laced with self-praise, become their primary affliction. God, spare us from falling into that rut!
