Письмо 62
The Labor of Interior Stillness
The believer is called to diligent, humble labor and the careful custody of thoughts.
Do your work little by little, with diligence, and think less about the obvious fruits. You must consider yourself wretched in everything—in absolutely everything.1 Your thoughts are worth guarding carefully, so make sure you do.
Clearing the Fog of Distraction
Mental wandering and daydreams obscure the vision of God, who is the only true object of desire.
Why wander the byways?2 How can you see the sun when dust is rising in a column and fog is all around you? All kinds of daydreams block out the Lord.3 What is sweeter or more beautiful than He is?✦ So why tear yourself away from Him to look at things that are nothing?4
Scripture echoes
- ↩Ps.34.8 — The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.
Notes
- 1 ↩Russian окаявать себя is the ascetical self-reckoning as wretched/accursed before God, not mere self-loathing or generic guilt; repeated во всем, во всем keeps the emphatic double stress of the source.
- 2 ↩распутия are crossroads/byways; here moral and mental straying, not literal roads.
- 3 ↩мечтания here are idle imaginations and fantasy, not hopeful aspiration; they screen the soul from God.
- 4 ↩ничтожность is nothingness/worthlessness—the empty vanity of distractions—not a technical philosophical term.
Letters on the Christian Life companion
Rule yourself daily, not just on retreat
Chosen Portion turns the mirror into a daily practice — a short reading and examining question each morning before you lead anyone.
Chosen Portion makes the mirror daily: the ruler-formation questions this collection preserves become a two-minute morning examination in the app.
- A daily formation reading drawn from centuries of counsel to those in authority
- One pointed examination question a day — two minutes, before the meetings start
- Track your practice over weeks and watch the examined life become a habit
