The Deception of False Zeal
The author gently corrects the recipient, noting that their recent outburst was likely fueled by illness rather than true spiritual concern.
You're ill; but I had taken your condition for something else, so I was about to come down on you with the sternest, most reproachful speech for a flare-up of great self-will in your anger at N.1 N. And for something else as well—I've forgotten: it's already past. Now I see that all of this is the result of nerves irritated by illness! May the Mother of God strengthen you! Just take this to heart: outbursts like these are rather unvirtuous. Here, truly, is Satan in the form of an angel of light. On the surface, there's nothing here but a sense of what's right.2
The Root of Self-Love
The author exposes how wounded pride often masquerades as a defense of truth, urging the recipient to recognize the difference between self-interest and genuine spiritual states.
The heart just boils — and is ready to go under the knife for the truth; the only talk on the tongue is of the truth, forgotten and violated by someone else. And that other person, who dared to violate it, seems completely absurd to us—even malicious. And in our eyes such a judgment is so right that if the whole world were present for it, it would certainly approve it.3 You see how clear and lawful everything is! But is that how things really stand? In reality it always turns out that at the root of such a sense of violated truth there always lies wounded self-love: the humiliation of our dignity, or failure to give it due respect or its due value. The heat of our zeal for the truth doesn't come from the truth being precious, but from someone having dared to violate that truth where we are concerned. If it were in relation to others, it would still be tolerable — that is,4 e. We might say through clenched teeth, "Yes, that's awkward," and leave it at that; perhaps we'd even make excuses for it. Do you notice that the outcry for truth is only on the surface, while inside it's a war for yourself? ! Well, now you can see who's wearing those angelic clothes. I've reminded you of all this just in case. Our soul is a complicated thing. Whether it's in a good state or a bad one is shown by peace or by turmoil.
Discerning the Spirit
The author provides a final rule for discernment: reject the agitation of the soul and seek the peaceful, sweet fruits of the Spirit.
When your soul is in turmoil, regardless of the cause, don't trust it; whatever it says is a lie. At that time Satan is putting ideas into it, and of course not for its salvation; and the poor thing strains with all its might.5 "Human anger does not produce the righteousness of God" (James 1:20).✦ 1:20). But everything that is of God is peaceful, quiet, and sweet; it leaves that sweetness in the soul and pours it out abundantly all around, even though it sometimes seems to rebuke.6 In those cases, there is warmth—even heat—but of a completely different kind: tender, not crackling.7 Have you sorted it out now?

Scripture echoes
- ↩Jas.1.20 — For the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.
Notes
- 1 ↩Russian самость here is the spiritual sense of self-assertion/ego, not mere individuality; rendered as self-will.
- 2 ↩Rendered as 'sense of what's right' to capture both moral conviction and the self-justifying 'feeling of truth' that the next section unmasks as wounded pride.
- 3 ↩свет here means the world at large (весь свет), not physical light.
- 4 ↩Source ends mid-abbreviation (т.), continued in the next section as т.е. ('that is'). Translation completes only the sense present here and leaves the sentence open.
- 5 ↩надоумливает: prompts/coaches with notions; rendered as 'putting ideas into it' to keep Feofan's plain, almost colloquial force.
- 6 ↩бранится будто: 'as if scolding/rebuking'; rendered 'seems to rebuke' for God's corrective severity that still leaves sweetness, not human quarreling.
- 7 ↩умиленный points toward umilenie—tender, softened devotion rather than sentimental softness; нетрескучий is the crackling, noisy fire of passion vs. quiet heat of grace.
