Lettera VI: A Monna Lapa, sua madre

A Call to Patient Love

Catherine opens her letter by emphasizing that true patience is the essential garment of the soul seeking to please God.

In the name of Jesus Christ crucified, and of sweet Mary. Dearest mother in Christ Jesus. I, Catherine, servant and slave of the servants of Jesus Christ, write to you in His precious blood; with a desire to see you as a true servant of the crucified Christ, grounded in true patience, for without patience we cannot please God. In patience, we show the desire for God's honor and the salvation of souls. And it also shows that the soul is conformed to and clothed in the sweet will of God; for it delights in everything and is content with whatever happens to it; thus, the creature, being clothed in such a sweet garment, always has peace and is content to endure suffering for the glory and praise of God's name.

Surrender and Service

Catherine urges her mother to strip away sensitive self-love and offer her life entirely to the service of God and the salvation of souls.

Give yourself, your children, all your possessions, and your life for the honor of God. Dearest mother, I want you to do this: offer your entire will—and me, your unworthy and miserable daughter—to the service and honor of God and the salvation of souls, with true and good patience. Nourish yourself with the fruit of the most holy cross along with the sweet, beloved, and humble Lamb. In this way, nothing will seem burdensome to you. Strip yourself of your sensitive love; for it is time to give honor to God and labor to your neighbor. When you strip away your own love, you'll go with delight, not with fatigue. I won't say more. Remain in the holy and sweet love of God. Sweet Jesus, love of Jesus.

Carissima madre in Cristo Gesù.
