Az igaz hitért

Az igaz hitért

Thank you, my holy heavenly Father, that out of so many countless pagan nations and those who have wandered away from the faith, you chose me—not for any merit of mine, but only by your goodness—and led me to the true knowledge of you, to the ancient Christian religion. For what good would it do me to be born into the world if you didn't enlighten me with the light of the true faith? After all, without faith it's impossible for me to be saved. O light of my soul, you who spring from the ungraspable brightness of God!1 O truth that cannot deceive, given as God's gift to guide our pilgrimage!2 Lord, let my soul follow your true teaching in this dark valley of ignorance, so that by it I may reach the day of eternal blessedness.3 Blessed are you, my God, who through the true faith have shown the unimaginable treasure of your riches, and through Christ have blessed us with every spiritual blessing.✦ Lord, strengthen throughout what you have begun in me; teach my ignorance, enlighten my blindness, fortify my frailty, and increase my faith.✦4 Keep safe within me the precious treasure of your true religion; help my weak faith, so that I may truly and without doubt believe whatever Holy Mother Church has set before me about you, your glory, the one Godhead of the Holy Trinity, the incarnation of your holy Son, and every article of the true faith; and against this, give no place to any clever reasoning, but keep my mind and senses captive to the obedience of faith.✦56 And so that this gift of yours may be useful and fruitful in me, give me your holy grace, so that my faith may not be found bare before you, without a wedding garment, but working through love may be adorned with good works; and above all, that I may boldly confess the true faith not only in word but in deed, and even, if need be, with my death — knowing that whoever denies the truth before men will be denied by him on the day of judgment.7 I believe and fully profess, my God, everything you have set before me through holy Mother Church, through the successors of the apostles.8 In this faith I want to come before your judgment seat. Keep me, Lord, in the true teaching until the end.9 Through your holy Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Mivel a hit nélkül lehetetlen üdvözülnöm.

Ebben a hitben akarok ítélőszéked eleibe menni. Amen.

Scripture echoes

  1. ↩Eph.1.3 — Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,
  2. ↩Phil.1.6 — I am confident of this very thing, that the one who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
  3. ↩Rom.1.5;2Cor.10.5 — Through him we received grace and apostleship to bring all the nations to the obedience that comes from faith, for the sake of his name. 2Cor.10.5 — We destroy arguments and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.

Notes

  1. 1 ↩foghatatlan: rendered as 'ungraspable' (also 'incomprehensible'); fényesség as 'brightness' rather than a more abstract 'glory'.
  2. 2 ↩megcsalatkozhatatlan: literally 'unable to be deceived/misled'; rendered as 'that cannot deceive' to keep the force of unfailing truth rather than a cold technical 'infallible'.
  3. 3 ↩igaz tudományodat: early modern tudomány here means true doctrine/teaching (doctrina), not modern 'science'.
  4. 4 ↩Early modern Hungarian vastagít literally means 'make thick/stout'; here rendered as 'fortify' for the sense of stiffening frailty, in parallel with erősítsed and öregbítsed.
  5. 5 ↩Paired with értelmemet (mind/understanding). In early modern Hungarian devotional prose, érzékenység commonly means the senses, sensibilities, or natural feeling; rendered here as 'senses'.
  6. 6 ↩Can mean reasoning, rationalizing, or sophistry; rendered as 'clever reasoning' to keep the pejorative force without sounding archaic.
  7. 7 ↩Hungarian malasztodat is rendered as “holy grace” (divine gift/aid), not mere favor.
  8. 8 ↩Source 'tekéletesen' is early modern orthography for tökéletesen ('perfectly'). 'Apostolok helytartói' rendered as 'successors of the apostles' (vicars/representatives of the apostles in Catholic hierarchical sense).
  9. 9 ↩Early modern 'tudomány' here means doctrine/teaching (doctrina), not modern 'science'.
