Chapter 75PonetCatechism.1.75

¶ Of the goinge downe of Christ into Hell.

Christ's Descent into Hell

Christ's spirit went down into Hell to preach to the imprisoned spirits, as testified by Saint Peter.

Just as Christ died and was buried for us, so also it must be believed that he went down into Hell. For the body lay in the tomb until the resurrection; but his spirit, departing from him, was with the spirits that were in prison, or in Hell, and preached to them, as the passage of Saint Peter testifies.12

Notes

  1. 1 ↩Source spelling 'resurruction' treated as 'resurrection'.
  2. 2 ↩Early Modern 'Ghost'/'Ghostes' rendered as 'spirit'/'spirits' (soul), not the Holy Ghost.
