Chapter 28PonetCatechism.1.28

Gods ymage defa ced in mā.

The Dimming of God's Image

The Master and Scholar discuss how the brightness of God's image in humanity has been corrupted by sin, and how God's wrath is a just response.

Master. What? Are there hardly any to be seen? Scholar. That's true; they don't shine now as they did in the beginning, before the fall of man, because man has corrupted the brightness of this image through the darkness of sin and the mist of error.1 In this very way, God has taken vengeance on sinful man in his wrath.2

Master. What▪ are ther sc… to be seen?

Scholer. It is true forsooth: for they do not now so shi…, as they dyd in the begynning, before mans fall: for as much as man by the darknesse of synnes, and myst of errours, hath corrupted the bryghtnesse of thys image. In suche sorte hath God i… hys wrathe wreaked hym vpon the synful man.

Notes

  1. 1 ↩Source lacuna 'shi…' restored as 'shine', matching the chapter's brightness imagery and the preceding talk of scarce sparks of God's image.
  2. 2 ↩Source lacuna 'i…' restored as 'in' ('God in his wrath'). Early Modern 'wreaked hym vpon' rendered as 'taken vengeance on', preserving the sense of wrath vented upon sinful humanity.
