The Interdependence of Leader and People

The moral health of the body politic depends on the mutual virtue of both the leader and the subjects.

Leadership is shaped by the merit of the people, and when God is pleased, every creature grows gentle and serves humanity. Apuleius put this elegantly and brilliantly; if only it were listened to. For if everyone works at their own self-improvement and considers external things as foreign, then truly the best person will be the guardian of individuals and of all; virtue and reason will flourish, with mutual love reigning everywhere, so that the flesh is subject to the spirit and the spirit, full of devotion, serves the Lord. If these things proceed, the members will not be burdened by the swelling of the head, nor will the head languish from the desertion or laziness of the members; for these things indeed arise from the infirmity of sin. For the faults of those below diminish a good leader, and the sins of those above are an occasion and authority for the subjects to do wrong. Hence the saying: The whole head is sick and the whole heart is sorrowful; from the sole of the foot to the crown of the head, there is no soundness in it. Thus, the leader grows gentle from the innocence of the people, and the innocence of the leader suppresses popular unrest.

Creation in Harmony with Divine Will

When humanity aligns with God, the natural world responds in service, but it turns to vengeance when God is provoked.

For when God is pleased, every creature is mild and serves humanity, but when He is indignant, every creature is armed for His vengeance. A raven fed Elijah; a bear served the prophet; to spare Daniel, a lion unlearned its natural ferocity and forgot its hunger; the waters were walked upon by the dry feet of the just; the fire stoked in the furnace did not harm the boys; and at the prayer of faith, the air withheld its rain, the earth denied its fruit, and heaven itself poured out its fire upon the wicked.
