The Necessity of a Human Mediator
God's justice requires that a human pay for human sin, yet a sinner cannot pay for others.
Why must he be a true and righteous man? Sin is committed by humans, and therefore God's justice demands that a man pay for sin; but one who is himself a sinner cannot pay for others.
The Necessity of a Divine Mediator
Only one who is also true God can bear the weight of divine wrath and restore life.
Why must he be both true God and a true, righteous man? Only if he is both true God can a man bear the burden of God's wrath and acquire and restore to us righteousness and life.
The Identity and Revelation of the Mediator
Jesus Christ is the mediator, revealed through the Gospel and the history of salvation.
Who is this mediator who is both true God and a true, righteous man? It's our Lord Jesus Christ, who has been given to us for complete redemption and righteousness. How do you know that? From the holy Gospel. God himself first revealed it in Paradise, then had it proclaimed through the holy patriarchs and prophets, and foreshadowed it through the sacrifices and other practices of the Law; finally, he fulfilled it through his only beloved Son.

Warum muss er ein wahrer und gerechter Mensch sein? Die Sünde wird von den Menschen begangen, darum verlangt Gottes Gerechtigkeit, dass ein Mensch für die Sünde bezahlt; wer aber selbst ein Sünder ist, kann nicht für andere bezahlen.
Warum muss er zugleich wahrer Gott sein? Nur wenn er zugleich wahrer Gott ist, kann ein Mensch die Last des Zornes Gottes ertragen und uns die Gerechtigkeit und das Leben erwerben und wiedergeben.
Wer ist denn dieser Mittler, der zugleich wahrer Gott und ein wahrer, gerechter Mensch ist? Unser Herr Jesus Christus, der uns zur vollkommenen Erlösung und Gerechtigkeit geschenkt ist.
Woher weißt du das? Aus dem heiligen Evangelium. Gott selbst hat es zuerst im Paradies offenbart, dann durch die heiligen Erzväter und Propheten verkündigen lassen und durch die Opfer und andere Bräuche des Gesetzes vorgebildet, zuletzt aber durch seinen einzig geliebten Sohn erfüllt.
