The Heart of the Law
The tenth commandment demands a heart that is fully opposed to sin and desires all righteousness.
What does God want in the tenth commandment? We shouldn't let any desire or thought arise in our hearts that would lead us to act against any command of God; instead, we should always be completely opposed to all sin and have a desire for all righteousness.
The Struggle for Obedience
While believers cannot keep the law perfectly in this life, they begin to live with a sincere intention to follow all of God's commands.
Can those who turn to God keep these commandments perfectly? No, even the most pious people in this life do not go beyond a small beginning of this obedience. However, they do begin, with firm intention, to live not just according to some, but according to all of God's commandments.
The Purpose of the Law
God commands the preaching of the law to drive us to Christ for forgiveness and to the Holy Spirit for ongoing renewal.
Why does God insist that we preach the Ten Commandments so earnestly, when no one can keep them in this life? First, we should recognize our sinful nature more and more throughout our entire lives and seek forgiveness for our sins and righteousness in Christ with increasing eagerness. Second, we should continually strive and ask God for the grace of the Holy Spirit, so that we may be renewed more and more into the image of God until we reach the goal of perfection after this life.

Was will Gott im zehnten Gebot? Wir sollen in unserem Herzen keine Lust und keinen Gedanken aufkommen lassen, gegen irgendein Gebot Gottes zu handeln, sondern wir sollen jederzeit von ganzem Herzen aller Sünde feind sein und Lust zu aller Gerechtigkeit haben.
Können aber die zu Gott Bekehrten diese Gebote vollkommen halten? Nein, sondern es kommen auch die frömmsten Menschen in diesem Leben über einen geringen Anfang dieses Gehorsams nicht hinaus. Wohl aber beginnen sie, mit fester Absicht nicht nur nach einigen, sondern nach allen Geboten Gottes zu leben.
Warum lässt uns Gott denn die zehn Gebote so eindringlich predigen, wenn sie doch in diesem Leben niemand halten kann? Erstens sollen wir unser ganzes Leben lang unsere sündige Art je länger, je mehr erkennen und umso begieriger Vergebung der Sünden und Gerechtigkeit in Christus suchen. Zweitens sollen wir unaufhörlich uns bemühen und Gott um die Gnade des Heiligen Geistes bitten, dass wir je länger, je mehr zum Ebenbild Gottes erneuert werden, bis wir nach diesem Leben das Ziel der Vollkommenheit erreichen.
