Reverence for the Holy Name
The third commandment calls us to honor God's name through speech and conduct, avoiding all misuse and blasphemy.
What does God want in the third commandment? God wants us to avoid blaspheming or misusing His name through cursing, false oaths, or unnecessary swearing. We also should not make ourselves guilty by our silence and inaction regarding such terrible sins. We should use God's holy name only with reverence and respect, so that He is rightly known, called upon, and praised in all our words and deeds.
The Gravity of Blasphemy
Blasphemy is identified as a uniquely grievous sin that provokes God's severe judgment.
Is it really such a serious sin to blaspheme God's name by swearing and cursing that God is also angry with those who do not do everything to prevent it? Yes; for there is no sin greater than the blasphemy of His name that angers God more severely. Therefore, He has commanded that those who commit it should be punished with death.

Was will Gott im dritten Gebot? Gott will, dass wir weder mit Fluchen oder mit falschem Eid, noch mit unnötigem Schwören seinen Namen lästern oder missbrauchen. Wir sollen uns auch nicht durch unser Stillschweigen und Zusehen an solchen schrecklichen Sünden mitschuldig machen. Gottes heiligen Namen sollen wir nur mit Furcht und Ehrerbietung gebrauchen, so dass er von uns recht bekannt, angerufen und in allen unseren Worten und Werken gepriesen wird.
Ist es denn eine so schwere Sünde, Gottes Namen mit Schwören und Fluchen zu lästern, dass Gott auch über die zürnt, die nicht alles tun, um es zu verhindern? Ja; denn es gibt keine Sünde, die größer ist und Gott heftiger erzürnt, als die Lästerung seines Namens. Darum hat er auch befohlen, sie mit dem Tode zu bestrafen.
