De sancto Udalrico

The Life and Ministry of Saint Ulrich

Ulrich's journey from his monastic upbringing to his faithful service as Bishop of Augsburg is marked by eucharistic devotion and miraculous healing.

Ulrich was born into a noble Alemannic family and raised at the monastery of Saint Gall; when he wanted to take the habit, a recluse forbade him, telling him he would one day be the bishop of Augsburg. As time went on, this came to pass; one day, while he was sitting at the table with Saint Conrad, the Bishop of Constance, he got up and celebrated Mass three times. When Conrad heard about this, he said, "No one has gone to Mass today more satisfied than he," believing that he had eaten. Many were healed and the eyes of many were enlightened by the oil he had consecrated on Maundy Thursday. Once, when he was suffering from a grave illness on the feast of Saint John the Baptist, two young men stood by him, and one asked, "Why don't you get up?" "You must celebrate Mass today for Saint John." He rose and celebrated twice that same day. After many miracles, in the year of our Lord 973, at the age of 82 and in the 50th year of his ordination, he departed to the Lord.

The Fragrant Legacy

Following his passing, the miraculous fragrance of his remains and his honorable burial by Bishop Wolfgang mark the conclusion of his earthly witness.

Cf. cap. 191. When it was uncovered for washing, such a fragrance emanated from it that all the hearts of those standing by were filled; it was then carried to the church, where Wolfgang, the Bishop of Regensburg, arrived and buried it honorably in the Church of Saint Afra.
