De decem millibus martirum
The Passion of the Ten Thousand
The ten thousand martyrs courageously confess Christ and endure crucifixion under Emperor Hadrian.
The passion and memory of the ten thousand martyrs. It is venerated and celebrated on the tenth day before the Kalends of July. They all suffered together on a single day for the name of Christ under Emperor Hadrian and six other kings who had come to his aid. When the emperor forced these holy martyrs to sacrifice to idols, they said: 'We offer ourselves as a living and spotless sacrifice to our Lord Jesus Christ, who deigned to be born for the human race, to descend from the heavens, to be afflicted by many evils, and finally even to be crucified for us—whom you, poor wretch, do not know.' Then the angry emperor ordered them to be tortured for a long time and finally crucified, and they endured all the torments that our Lord Jesus Christ suffered for the Lord with a strong spirit and the firmest faith. The place, therefore, where the blessed martyrs suffered is a great mountain called Arrahe, and it is about five hundred stadia from the city of Alexandria. The armies of the kings who had come to his aid, by whom they were killed, numbered thirty thousand.
The Prayer of the Martyrs
The martyrs offer a final prayer for those who honor their memory, receiving a divine promise of intercession.
At the sixth hour of that day, a great earthquake occurred, the rocks split, the sun darkened, and all the signs seen at the Lord's passion were, behold, seen there; then the holy martyrs, pouring out their prayer to the Lord, said: 'Lord God, remember us on this cross of suffering and accept our petition, and deign to grant us what we ask of you, so that whoever celebrates our memory with heart and mouth, with fasting and devotion, may deserve to obtain from you a fruitful reward, granting them health of body, medicine for the soul, and in their homes, both within and without, an abundance of all good things.' And if they are in battle, may visible and invisible enemies be unable to harm them while you fight for them; protect them with your weapons as you see fit, and may the day of our one-day passion fulfill a year of penance for those who observe it with a devout heart. And this, Lord and Master, we ask of you: scatter every distraction and every impurity. Drive out their spirit and every infirmity, because your name is glorious and praiseworthy through all ages of ages. And when everyone answered 'Amen,' a voice came from heaven saying: 'Know, my most beloved ones, that you have obtained what you asked for. Rejoice and be glad, because your prayers have truly been heard before Christ and the immortal King.' And having said this, they gave up their spirit in confession, truly about to receive the rewards of the kingdom of heaven.
