Bodily vs. Spiritual Possession
While bodily possession by the devil is a great misery, spiritual possession through sin is a far greater danger.
Through sin the devil has power over you. To be destroyed by the devil is a great evil; to be destroyed by sins is still greater, says Chrysostom (Homily 4112 on the Acts3 of the Apostles.)4 The devil possesses many a devout person bodily. The reason is known to God. And yet, he still cannot claim even one hair of that person as his own.✦ He possesses the godless spiritually.
The Greater Enemy
Sin is the true dwelling place of the devil, making it a more formidable enemy than the tempter himself.
The sin that rules is the house he lives in. He can say of such a person: this one is mine. Being possessed in body is a great misery; being possessed in spirit is even worse. If you fear the devil, then fear sin all the more. Without a stinger, a bee can't do any harm, and without sin, neither can the devil. Augustine says that whoever fears hellfire doesn't fear sinning, but burning; yet whoever fears to sin fears sin itself like hellfire. I want to be as much an enemy of the devil as I am of sin—and yet, even more an enemy of sin than of the devil. For sin is the devil's kingdom and his work within me.
Sin's Ruin and God's Grace
While God can turn the devil's work toward the believer's good, sin remains an unmitigated force of destruction.
He must remain outside if sin won't let him in. The devil has to work for my good, too; we know that for those who love God, all things—even death and the devil—serve for the best. Rom. 8:28. But sin only seeks and brings about my ruin.

Hüte dich! Willst du wissen was es sei? die Sünde.
Durch die Sünde hat der Teufel Macht über dich. Vom Teufel erledigt werden ist ein großes, von Sünden noch ein größeres, sogt Chrysostomus (Homilie 41. in Ap. Gesch.) Der Teufel besitzt manchen frommen Menschen leiblich. Die Ursach ist Gott bekannt. Er kann aber doch nicht sagen, daß ihm ein Härlein von dem Menschen zukomme. Den gottlosen besitzt er geistlich.
Die herrschende Sünde ist das Haus, darin er wohnt. Von dem kann er sagen: dieser ist mein eigen. Leiblich besessen sein, ist ein großer Jammer; geistlich noch ein größerer. Fürchtest du dich nun vor dem Teufel, so fürchte dich vielmehr vor der Sünde. Ohne Stachel kann die Biene nicht schaden, und ohne Sünde der Teufel nicht. Wer das höllische Feuer fürchtet, der fürchtet sich nicht zu sündigen, sondern zu brennen; wer sich aber fürchtet zu sündigen, der fürchtet die Sünde selbst wie das höllische Feuer, spricht Augustinus. Ich will dem Teufel so feind sein als der Sünde; doch der Sünde noch feinder als dem Teufel. Denn die Sünde ist des Teufels Reich und Werk in mir.
Er muß wol draußen bleiben, wenn ihn die Sünde nicht einläßt. Der Teufel muß auch mein bestes befördern; wir wissen daß denen so Gott lieben, alle Dinge, auch Tod und Teufel zum besten dienen Röm. 8, 28. Die Sünde aber sucht und bringt nur mein Verderben.
