Invocation of the Holy Spirit
The prayer opens by calling upon the Holy Spirit to dwell within the hearts of the faithful and grant them divine comfort and strength.
Come, God the Creator, Holy Spirit; visit the hearts of your people. Fill them with grace, for you know they are your creatures. For you are called the Comforter, the precious gift of God Most High. You turn toward us as a spiritual anointing, a living spring, love, and fire. Kindle a light in our understanding; fill our hearts with the fire of love. You know the weakness of our flesh; uphold us firmly by your strength and favor.
The Spirit's Gifts and Guidance
The prayer acknowledges the sevenfold gifts of the Spirit and asks for protection against the enemy and guidance in the way of peace.
You are sevenfold in your gifts, the finger of God's right hand; you swiftly send the Father's word abroad in every land through many tongues.✦✦✦ Drive the enemy’s cunning far from us; let your grace establish peace among us, so that we gladly follow your leading and avoid harm to the soul.
Knowledge of the Trinity
The prayer concludes by seeking a deeper knowledge of the Father and the Son through the Spirit, followed by a doxology of praise.
Teach us to know the Father well, and Jesus Christ, his Son, so that we may be filled with faith and understand you, Spirit of them both. Praise be to God the Father and to the Son, who rose from the dead; may the Comforter receive the same praise, forever and always.
