R67: Abt A. von St. Emmeram in Regensburg an Hildegard von Rupertsberg
Salutation and Blessing
The provost greets Hildegard humbly and gives thanks to God for the comfort and hope she brings to the despairing.
Provost of Saint Emmeram. To Hildegard. Most devoted handmaid of Christ, Hildegard. A. Unworthy provost of the monastery of Saint Emmeram in Regensburg. Perseverance in all good things bestowed by the Father of lights.✦ We give thanks to the Lord our God, who has wonderfully adorned his church by giving you to it. For through you all the righteous gloriously boast, and those who have been in despair until now are blessedly gladdened.
A Soul in Despair
The provost explains that the letter-bearer is in despair over his salvation and has commended himself to Hildegard's care.
because they hope that through you they can be reconciled to Christ. And so the bearer [REDACTED] this letter, as he asserts, is now in despair over his own salvation. He recently lamented his miseries to me. Begging him to be commended to the presence of your blessedness with letters of commendation.
Commendation and Petition
The provost commends the bearer to Hildegard's compassion and asks her to intercede for his salvation and for all under his care.
For this reason, O handmaid of Christ, I commend him to your piety and compassion. Humbly asking that for the love of almighty God, for his salvation, you would strive with all your strength and with all who are obedient to you. Furthermore, O one beloved of God, I beseech your lordship! that you would deign to commend me and all those entrusted to me to Christ with your constant prayers, for he is the rewarder and the reward of the labors of his saints. Amen.
Farewell
The letter closes with a brief farewell.
Farewell.
