Prophetic Setting and Heavenly Altar
Hildegard introduces herself and the Cathars, then in July vision beholds the altar before God, the throne, and the twenty-four elders rousing the glassy sea.
From Hildegard, concerning the Cathars. In the month of July of the present year, which is the one thousand one hundred sixty-third year of the Lord's incarnation. Looking from a distance. I saw, in the shadow of a true vision, the altar that stands before the eyes of God!✦ And I also saw beneath the throne of God.✦ And I saw that the twenty-four elders who sit in a circle around the throne were stirring the glassy sea that lies before the throne!✦ And they spoke. Let us shake the worthless foundations of mockery belonging to those who wish to set up their own injustice in the place of justice.
Call to Confront Injustice and the Ancient Lion
The elders summon the community to shake worthless foundations and burning sparks of injustice, while the ancient lion roars and apocalyptic measures of judgment are declared.
And let us set in motion the burning sparks of injustice belonging to those who claim to rule the people but don't rule! And let us set in motion the pipes of depraved variety in corrupt manners and the gilded strings of deceivers and the schisms born of schisms. For the ancient lion roars! Flying among the previously mentioned burning sparks of injustice to fly. But it won't be this way. Let us call upon the ancient one in whom are all kinds of things being born. And all creatures are numbered. And let us look at the sword that appeared in the mouth of the one speaking. And let's see how many two-pound measures of wheat and barley there are. And let's consider the trumpet that sounds before the first woe. And by the oath of those, and by the power of the one who sits on the throne. Let's bind the neck of the ancient lion. And let's restrain him with a bridle, before the times of times and half a time. And before forty months. Let the sea send forth a woman fleeing into the wilderness. For there are twenty-three years and four months.
Four Winds and Corruption of Human Works
Corrupt works rise like a black beast’s breath, driving the four winds from the four directions, bringing foul customs, blasphemy, vices, and serpentine outward religion.
because from the corrupt works of men, which are blown forth from the mouth of a black beast. The four winds, driven through the four corners of the angles, have been set in motion toward a great downfall. when those same works rose up above them. so that in the east, a cycle of foul customs has been breathed forth. And in the west, blasphemy and forgetfulness of God toward his holy ones — through the fame of the calf and through the worship of idols — have been torturing the holy sacrifice. And in the south, hateful vices. And in the north, the phylacteries of garments, spread wide according to the twisting serpent! which, when all the aforesaid evils came upon them afterward, were defiled.
Martyrs, Miracles, and the Black Horse
After a time note, the ancient serpent’s deception is mentioned, then saints under the altar cry out, their ashes violated, a miracle-working wind arises, and the rider on the black horse sends opposing winds that will not prevail.
But still, it's sixty years and twenty-four months! because the ancient serpent began to deceive the peoples with the phylacteries of garments.1 Now, however, the innumerable saints of God who are under the altar raise their voices.✦2 crying out that the bodily sprinkling of their ashes has been violated through the wickedness of the peoples.3 Whence from the sound of them a wind blows that now works miracles. but the one who sat upon the black horse—✦4 that one sends forth hissings of the opposing wind, wandering as it goes!5 but it will not prevail.
The Dragon’s Roar and God’s Measuring Hand
The ancient dragon roars against the saints, boasts of human-made corruptions, is answered by a hymn-like confession of God’s omnipotence, and the community is told they act in God by a fiery spark, while those who rebel will be brought back toward their first founding.
And again the ancient dragon roars against the saints in wrath, lifting itself up above the wings of the winds!✦ And it says: What is this? That thing. Which they and those like them established! I will destroy it. And they give answer to it. Who has measured the waters in the hollow of a hand!✦ He has measured the heavens by the span of his hand!✦ Who has weighed the bulk of the earth with three fingers!✦ He has weighed the mountains on a balance!✦ And the hills — on the scales!✦ For we are weighed in the balance of God!✦ In him we do all things through a fiery spark that shines toward his face. But you — in your eye you have fire for burning. And from that very fire you will draw out flame, nearly all the way back to the place of your first founding.
Delayed Judgment and the New Song
Though the community will act against God and heaven, judgment is delayed; when God once measured the heavens, a burning mountain will fall on the oppressor’s neck, their strength destroyed, and a new song will be given.
And you'll do this against God, against the heavens, and against all who dwell in heaven. But not yet. When God weighed out the heavens with the span of his hand, then a burning mountain will fall on your neck. And all your strength will be completely destroyed. But from the throne a new song will then be given to us! And eyes that see and gaze upon everything all around will look on. But you, in your most ravenous throat, don't yet have the time for devouring.
Warning Against the Serpent’s Towers and False Light
The prophet rebukes spiritual madness, calls the peoples to hear, warns that the serpent builds towers in their ears like the Sadducees and idolaters, and exposes deceptive spirits that mimic the elements and vanish.
Through the throne of God and through all his vestments, having conspired, stop this madness of yours. But you — peoples and nations! Hear the spirit speaking to you. The ancient serpent builds towers in the midst of your ear. Namely, those who are like the Sadducees. And those who name Baal as god and do not know the true God. So that by the craft of a deceitful spirit, a spark sometimes appears to them. That is, something black or turbulent or bright — and localized — which soon vanishes. And this is both diabolical and deceptive! Because deceptive spirits sometimes make themselves like the four elements and all their forces. Because they overcame the first man. But what is from God —there is wisdom and prophecy. And a hidden manifestation in foreign matters that do not pertain to man! Because God is incomprehensible. But these are the men about whom the devil builds towers in his little ear.
Images of Treacherous Teachers and Deniers of Creation
False teachers are likened to crabs, scorpions, and great birds that abandon their eggs; they deny God’s creation and the Lord’s pre-existent Word becoming man, and are said to be worse than the blind Jews.
They're like a crab that walks forward and backward. And like scorpions who, with their fiery tails, secretly fasten themselves on you. And with the deadliest venom of a treacherous faithlessness, they destroy you. Those whom the devil sometimes assails under the appearance of divine commands. These people seek their own will, for they are the image of God! And this is why he does it. So that, by mocking them, he may deceive them all the more easily afterward. These are also like certain great birds. They scatter their own eggs and throw them away. And they say: Let's cast this away from ourselves. Because it is poisonous. These are the ones who deny the first principles. Namely, that God created all things and commanded them to proceed by germinating and by growing. These are the ones who deny the Lord's principle — namely, that before the antiquity of days He appeared, because the Word of God had to become man.✦6 These are worse for you than the Jews, who now have blind eyes for seeing the fiery form that now shines as man in holy divinity!7
Sulfurous Beast, Fiery Scourge, and Prophetic Contrast
The wicked appear as sulfurous mountains and a grotesque beast opposing God and heaven, while the devil fills them with blasphemy, recalling the ancient serpent’s failed club and his renewed scheming.
Yet after a long time, they will think they see the just one. How long will God strike them with his fiery scourge — the very one they once looked up to? These are also sulfurous mountains, mixed with fire, along with the most wicked beast who will open her mouth against God. And against heaven, and against all who are in heaven! And they are also the entrails of that same grotesque beast, who welcomes and then spews out the worst filth, going before her by embracing the foulness and wickedness of all evils along the path of those who wander — just as the prophets prophesied the Lord in the way of salvation, pointing him out with all the virtues of justice, those whom the finger of God inspired and taught!8 Just as the devil too fills them by steeping them in blasphemy and wickedness and lies — the sum of all evils. For in the ancient serpent, at the beginning of his downfall, the club he thought he had failed him.9 But now he considers it within himself.
Call to the Faithful and Priestly Justice
The beast’s strength will be crushed; the faithful are urged to look to God, hear the voice of the One who was and is, and listen to priests who hold fast to divine justice.
because this most wicked beast may be with its nails — its own. so that when it is with it, it may accomplish its every desire. but in it all its strength will be completely crushed. Now you, people, who have the purest faith — look to God! Listen to the voice of the one who was and who is. And the one who is coming to you, saying: Listen to the words of the priests who hold fast to my justice and keep it.
Expulsion of the Unclean and Warning of Judgment
When faithful voices cry out, the unclean and profane are to be tormented with harsh words and driven into caves, lest the community be anathematized and lose peace.
And these words of mine will sound in the ears of those who will also speak these words in my name to you! And when their voices cry out, cast out from you the aforementioned unclean and profane people. And with harsh and hard words torment them. And lead them entirely to expulsion. And drive them completely out into wretched caverns and caves. Because they want to seduce you! And do this also for this reason: so that you won't be anathematized by God and so that peace won't flee from you!
False Security, Ruin, and Praise of God
Those who shelter false teachers cannot be true leaders before God; cities and estates will be destroyed, while praise is given to God who sits on the throne, holds the heavens, and whose Spirit speaks.
Because you cannot be called teachers and priests, kings and leaders and princes before God. As long as you give them dwellings alongside yourselves. Because your cities and villages will be destroyed. And your estates will be plundered on account of these criminal men. If they remain with you. Now let there be praise to God, who sits upon the throne and beholds the abysses! And who holds all the heavens in his dominion. And the Spirit of God says:
Final Charge to Write and Guard Against Deception
Those who refuse God’s words will be struck down; Hildegard is commanded to write and send the vision to pure-faith priests so the people may guard themselves from devilish schemes, after which she records her ensuing weakness until delivery.
Whoever refuses to hear and take in these words, and refuses to believe them! The sword of God's word will strike that person down with great trouble. And at once in the same vision I heard a rushing voice speaking to me. Write down what you have seen and heard. And send these things quickly to the priests of the church who worship God with the purest faith. so that they may proclaim them everywhere, all around, to the people. so that they may guard themselves from these devilish schemes! Lest they take root among them and perish. But I, in my poor and lowly condition, was then afflicted by weakness for many days and grew faint.10 So much so that I couldn't stand fully on my own feet! until I had commended this writing to them.11
