Chapter 6DanPsalm.1.6

Dend IX. Sang

The Invitation to the Feast

The believer approaches the altar to receive the body and blood of Christ in the holy sacrament.

O Jesus, at your altar food, with the faith of my heart, with prayer and offering, I kneel before God's sweet Lamb, who bears all the world's sin and shame. With my heart, I offer myself to you, where sin cuts and wounds deeply, while, Jesus, your wounded Body will fill them with healing balm. Today, I am at my Jesus' feast; O soul, consider this great celebration. He invites you to the table with Him, and yes, He feeds you with Himself. Here He offers me under the Bread His Body, which suffered the Death of the Cross, and under the Wine His Blood of the Rose, that precious flood of Grace. Eat, drink, and be glad at heart with this food that’s more than angel’s fare, and for this cup, which no angel ever drank, give thanks to Jesus.

Faith Beyond the Senses

The believer affirms that the mystery of the sacrament is received through faith rather than human understanding.

I believe and know what I receive here, even beyond my senses! I receive my Jesus completely, and from Him alone I am satisfied. I see, O God’s angels, here below, and I honor the mystery that Jesus, at God’s right hand, is present here in the bond of the Testament. There is joy in Him, a sweet joy; here He is in the blessed bread. There is strength in His honor; here in the blessed juice of the wine. How it happens, I don't know; He hasn't wanted to show me the way. My senses shouldn't be led astray so high; it's enough for me to trust His word. So rejoice, my soul and spirit, that even the humble hand of God's servant can reach you with this blessed gift, in which God has bound Himself to you.

The Sustenance of the Soul

The sacrament is described as the foundational strength, comfort, and eternal hope for the believer's life.

That table is the strength of my soul; there I receive the heavenly essence of life. It is the root of my heart's strength; it is my comfort, my faith, my spirit. This table is set by the mouth of Truth, for the firm foundation of salvation; it is my hope that sustains me, my life and joy eternally. O Jesus, let me never depart From this table where you are present. I cast aside all the world, And I long always to return there. Until you will move me in Heaven up to you, where I shall receive eternal honor, and I have enough in you to see.
