The Death of King Louis IX on Crusade
In 1270, King Louis IX of France set out with his sons and many princes to recover the Holy Land, but he and one son died on the journey.
On the recovery of the Holy Land. . 127C! In the year of our Lord 1270, on the sixth of the calends of September, Louis, king of France, with — . . . —his sons and many princes undertook the journey for the recovery of the Holy Land, but he himself, with one son and many others, was dying on the way.
Louis's Final Prayer and the Crusade's Aftermath
Louis IX died after offering a psalm-prayer; meanwhile Charles of Sicily achieved concessions from the sultan, Edward of England arrived with great hopes, but the crusader army was ultimately scattered due to the deaths of its leaders.
This most Christian king, after many prayers, offered this prayer: "I will enter your house; I will worship toward your holy temple and confess your name, Lord," and having said this, he fell asleep in the Lord.✦ Another part of the army advanced, and when Charles, king of Sicily, came to them with his men, they rejoiced, and they so greatly distressed the sultan and his forces that he allowed God's churches, built in all the cities of his kingdom, to remain, so that the faith of Christ would be preached throughout his whole kingdom, and those who wished to be baptized would be baptized, and he himself would become a tributary to the Christians. After this had taken place, Edward, king of England, came with a multitude of Frisians and pilgrims, and they numbered two hundred thousand fighters in the whole army, and the Christians hoped that they would subjugate not only the Holy Land but also the land of the Saracens to themselves. But because of the demands of sins, the whole army of the Christians is scattered, so that no other benefit followed from it, because the pope, the patriarch, the legate, and the king of Navarre are dead.
