The English king was involved in a prolonged dispute over the election of Alfonso of Castile and Richard of Cornwall as rival kings of the Romans.
The king of England was in dispute over the election to the kingship of the Romans. In the year of our Lord 1256, the princes of Germany elected two candidates — namely Alfonso, king of Castile, and Richard, count of Cornwall, brother of the king of England — in a disputed election as king of the Romans, and that dispute lasted a very long time.

Pope Alexander canonized Saint Clare in 1257, a figure associated with the order of Saint Damian and later the Friars Minor.
