De Gebelinis et Gelphis.

The Origin of Guelphs and Ghibellines

In 1228 the Guelph and Ghibelline factions arose in Italy from two brothers, one supporting the empire and the other the Church.

In the year of our Lord 1228, the factions known as the Guelphs and the Ghibellines first arose in Italy — these are the names of two brothers who divided themselves against one another. The Ghibelline party supported the cause of the empire; the Guelph party, that of the Church. (Ptol.)
