Chapter 101ChrP.5.101

De vastacione lerritorii Wayken.

The Devastation of Wayken

In 1330, a force led by the count of Brandenburg and the brother of the count of Prussia invaded Lithuania and burned the territory of Wayken, but found little plunder because the people had been forewarned.

In the year of our Lord 1330, the count from the March of Brandenburg and from Mandaa, and the brother of the count of Prussia, came in wintertime, and the master sent with them a hundred brothers and three thousand horsemen, who entered the land of Lithuania and devastated with fire the territory called Wayken; but because the people had been forewarned long before, they carried off only meager plunder.12

Notes

  1. 1Mandaa and Wayken are uncertain toponyms; identifications are tentative.
  2. 2cum eis treated as preposition ('with them') rather than temporal/causal conjunction; causal reading ('since') is also possible but less natural in context.
