Chronicon Terrae Prussiae (Chronicle of the Prussian Land)/Book 4 · Tercia pars: De bellis fratrum domus Theutonice contra Pruthenos
Chapter 74ChrP.4.74

De apostasia Pruthenorum secunda, que duravit xv annis.

The Second Apostasy of the Prussians

Exploiting the Teutonic Knights' wartime weakness, the Prussians collectively renounced the faith and relapsed into their former errors, appointing regional war-leaders to lead their rebellion.

In the same year, on the eve of blessed Matthew the apostle and evangelist, the Prussians — seeing that the brothers were weakened in this war, in their members, men-at-arms, horses, weapons, and other things (seven, and whatever else is needed for battle) — heaping evils upon evils and grief upon grief, apostatized once more from the faith and from the faithful, and relapsed into their former errors. And the Sambians chose a certain man called Glande, the Natangians Henry of Monte, the Warmians Glappus, the Pogesanians Auttumeb, the Bartians Diwanumc as captains and leaders of their army.123

Notes

  1. 1'Sept' (token 23) is uncertain in the source: possibly the numeral 'seven' or an abbreviation. The translation preserves it as 'seven' with a parenthetical marker, pending further review.
  2. 2'Diwanumc' (token 61) is a proper name with an uncertain ending, possibly a scribal variant. The form is preserved as given.
  3. 3The phrase 'addentes mala malis et dolorem super dolorem' ('heaping evils upon evils and grief upon grief') echoes scriptural cadence (cf. Ecclesiastes, prophetic lament), but no direct quotation is confirmed here.
