Chronicon Terrae Prussiae (Chronicle of the Prussian Land)/Book 4 · Tercia pars: De bellis fratrum domus Theutonice contra Pruthenos
Chapter 6ChrP.4.6

De bello fratrum contra Pomesanos et de edificacione castri Insule.

Invocation of Holy Mary

The chapter opens with a brief invocation of Holy Mary.

Holy Mary.

Grace of the Cross and Preparation for the Campaign

Through the grace of the cross, forts are built and the faithless are cleansed from Colmen, preparing the way for the brothers' expedition.

After these forts had been built through the grace of the cross, and the old leaven of malice and wickedness of the faithless had been cleansed from the borders of the land of Colmen — so that God of our salvation might grant us a prosperous journey to the lands of neighboring nations, as some reckon with certainty — the master and brothers, having secretly prepared the supplies necessary for building forts, came by ship to the island. Part Three.

Building the Fort on the Island of Holy Mary

In 1233 the master and brothers erect a fort on a mound opposite Quidino, naming it the Island of Holy Mary.

From Quidino, as it were from opposite what is now the island of Holy Mary, and there in the year of our Lord 1233 they erected a fort on a certain mound, calling it the Island of Holy Mary.

Relocation of the Fort to Pomesania

The Magdeburg burgrave, arriving with forces at Colmen, joins the master and brothers in transferring the fort of the Island of Holy Mary from Quidino to Rysene in Pomesania, changing its location but not its name.

But while that noble man and active knight in arms from Saxony, the burgrave of Magdeburg — so called — was coming with a small force, surrounded by a large soldiery and many armored men, to the fort of Colmen, within the year in which he remained in that same place he went with the master and brothers, and transferred the aforementioned fort of the Island of Holy Mary from the island of Quidino to the place where it now stands, in the territory of Pomesania called Rysene, changing the location but not the name.
