Chapter 45ChrP.4.45

De victoria, in qua fratres mille et quingentos Pomeranos occiderunt.

Scouts and the March to Wischerot

Master Poppo sends scouts to observe Swantepolcus, then advances with Duke Casimir's army to Wischerot, where the scouts report Swantepolcus fortifying Sweczam.

Brother Poppo, the master, having sent scouts ahead to observe more carefully what Swantepolcus was doing, arrived with his own army and that of Duke Casimir near the fortress of Wischerot, and there they pitched camp. The scouts returned and reported that Swantepolcus, with a great force of his army, was stationed around the fortress of Sweczam and was fortifying it.

The Rout at Sweczam

The brothers send ten mounted men to harass the enemy; the Pomeranian force panics and flees, and fifteen hundred Pomeranians are slain.

After deliberation, it seemed best to everyone that they should attack him there; and ten mounted men were sent ahead from Golmine to harass the enemy force. When twenty men from the opposing side came out to meet them, the brothers killed one soldier; the other nineteen, upon seeing the brothers' banner, fled. And as these fugitives came in their flight toward Swantepolcus's army, they all turned tail. Of them, a few who made it to the fortress were saved; all the rest were either drowned or fell by the edge of the sword. And so, from among the Pomeranian people, one thousand five hundred men were killed by the brothers on that day.

Thanksgiving and Spoils of Victory

The brothers return thanks to God for the victory and rejoice over the plunder taken from the enemy.

After this victory, the brothers returned to the Lord, rendering thanks to God and rejoicing in the Lord with the greatest plunder taken from the enemy.
