De reditu nunciorum legatorum.
The Envoys Return with a Pagan King's Defiant Oath
In December, envoys return to Riga bearing a Lithuanian noble who publicly declares, on oath to the pagan gods, that the Lithuanian king has never submitted letters of baptism to the pope and will never abandon the ancestral faith, a testimony confirmed by the messengers before the assembled faithful, after which the envoys carry this defiant response back to the apostolic see.
. November! That year, on the Kalends of December, the envoys' messengers returned to Riga, accompanied by a certain Lithuanian noble — said to be second only to the king himself — who spoke in a loud voice on behalf of the king, in the presence of the envoys and a crowd of prelates and other faithful gathered around. He declared that no letters concerning the king's conscience regarding the matter of his own baptism or that of his people had ever been issued, nor had they been presented to the lord pope, nor had he ordered such things to be published in speeches in the coastal cities and other provinces. He added that the king himself had sworn by the power of the gods that he would never wish to accept any other law except the one in which his ancestors died. The aforementioned messengers also affirmed this same thing to be true before the entire crowd. When this had been heard, the envoys returned to the apostolic see with the response they had been given.
