Chapter 279ChrP.4.279

De occisione lv Lethotvinorum.

The Raid on Wohenstorph and Its Bitter Reckoning

David of Gartha raids Prussian territory and seizes great booty, but the Lethowinians pursue and are ambushed by Teutonic brothers who recover the plunder and slay fifty of them, leaving the survivors to flee in terror through perilous retreat.

That year, when floodwaters swept through the wilderness, David, castellan of Gartha, set out to war with eight hundred men. He drew up his army in ambush, then entered a territory of Prussia called Wohenstorph with eighty men. After burning a few houses, he carried off great booty in captives and other goods, leading them back with him. Brother Ulrich of Drilebe, commander of Tapiow, and Brother Frederick Quitz, his companion, followed them with a few men; having first broken down the bridge that the Lethowinians needed to cross, they killed fifty of them and tore the entire booty — which they had carried off — from their hands. The rest fled to their ambush positions, and all together, thoroughly terrified, they withdrew. They endured so many dangers on the way that few of them returned unharmed.
