Chapter 277ChrP.4.277

De combustione suburbii Junigede.

The Burning of Junigeda's Suburb

The Teutonic marshal's surprise assault on Junigeda fails when the garrison signals neighboring peoples with smoke; the brothers burn the suburb but suffer casualties, including Brother Theodoricus, during their retreat.

In September of that same year, on the feast day of the blessed apostle Matthew, the same marshal came with a great army to the fields of Calsen, and fifteen hundred cavalrymen, leaving their horses behind under the brothers' banner, crossed the forest called Wint on foot. At daybreak, as they were trying to approach the castle of Junigeda secretly and storm it, the garrison soldiers, who had already been forewarned, set a fire and used the smoke as a signal to betray the brothers' army to the neighboring peoples. Moving forward, the brothers attacked the castle fiercely, and after a long dispute had broken out between them, since they could do no further damage, they burned the suburb of the aforementioned castle to ashes. After this had been done, as the brothers were withdrawing, all the neighboring peoples, having seen the smoke of the aforementioned fire, gathered and repeatedly attacked them with hostility, so that many on both sides were severely wounded. Brother Theodoricus of Pirremont was killed, and several of the infidels were slain as well.
