Chapter 267ChrP.4.267

De impugnacione castri Raganite.

The Surprise Assault on Raganita

In 1215, Lethowinus and his forces launched a sudden attack on the castle Raganita; the Teutonic brothers, unable to withstand the overwhelming numbers, suffered casualties including Brother John Poppo, and the invaders ultimately withdrew after devastating the surrounding crops.

In the year of our Lord 1215, around the Assumption of the blessed Virgin, Lethowinus and his men from SaAugust and Methia came secretly and unexpectedly with the full strength of their army to the castle Raganita and attacked it. When the brothers met them in battle, they were unable to resist so great a multitude and were forced to fall back — yet not without loss to their own, because Brother John, called Poppo, was killed there by the unbelievers and several others were wounded. Finally, when the Lethowini achieved nothing in this attack, they trampled and destroyed the crops in the fields of both castles — that is, of the Scalowitae and of Raganita — and withdrew.
