Chapter 227ChrP.4.227

The Coronation of Wenceslaus and the Devastation of Dobrin

King Wenceslaus of Bohemia is crowned in Poland, while the Lethgwini ravage the duchy of Dobrin, seizing goods and equipment the Poles had hidden there out of fear of the new king.

That year Wenceslaus, king of Bohemia, was crowned in the kingdom of Poland. And six thousand of the Lethgwini devastated the duchy of Dobrin, killing, capturing, and burning whatever would catch fire, and they carried off all the horse equipment and other things that the Poles, out of fear of the king just mentioned, had moved into the said duchy.

The Ambush at the Driwance and the Rout of the Lithuanians

A hundred Lethgwini raiders cross the Driwance to plunder Kolm, where the Teutonic brothers kill seventy and ransom Christian captives; the survivors flee in terror, and many perish in the Narew river in the panicked retreat.

From this army, a hundred men — picked and daring — ventured to cross the river Driwance and to plunder two villages in the land of Kolm, whom the brothers, following with their army, seized, and killing seventy of them, they ransomed many captured Christians. Another thirty Lithuanians who had escaped, while fleeing came to their army to report what the brothers had done, were made so fearful and terrified that no one waited for another, but running through day and night many men and horses perished, and still more of them were submerged in the river Narew because of the sheer crush of numbers.
