Chapter 153ChrP.4.153

De expugnacione castri Ramige.

Trust in God and the Storming of Ramige

Moved by trust in God's favor, Brother Theodoricus assaults and captures the castle of Ramige despite casualties among his men.

Difficult things—even things that seem impossible for human nature—a person who has placed his trust in the Lord dares to undertake when, from certain signs and clear evidence, he perceives that God is favorable to him.1 And so Brother Theodoricus, mentioned before, approached with his army toward the shore opposite the Memel and attacked the castle of Ramige in the same manner; and although in that assault some of his men had been wounded and killed, nevertheless on the same day he violently seized and destroyed it, taking some of the men prisoner and killing the rest.23

Read the original Latin

Ardua et quasi impossibilia humane nature homo confisus in domino audet aggredi, quando ex certis indiciis et signis evidentibus sentit sibi deum propicium. Ende frater Theodoricus predictus cum exercitu suo ad littusMemele oppositum accedens, castrum Ramige'1 eodem modo impugnavit, et licet in dicta impugnacione aliqui de suis vulnerati fuerant et occisi; tarnen eodem die ipsum violenter obtinuit et destruxit, partim hominibus captis, aliis occisis.

Notes

  1. 1propicium rendered 'favorable' to capture the sense of divine goodwill/propitiousness without archaic diction.
  2. 2'Ende' is a Middle Low German loanword functioning as 'and so / hence'; rendered accordingly. 'tarnen' is a variant spelling of 'tamen' (nevertheless).
  3. 3obtinuit rendered 'seized' in the military sense of taking possession by force.
