Chapter 124ChrP.4.124

De secunda dicte civitatis Insule sancte Marie destructione.

The Prussians Advance and the Brothers Ride Out

After the Prussians ravage the land of Culm and advance toward Belichow, Brother Conrad the Swabian rides out from Elbing and engages them in a fierce joust with many wounded on both sides.

After the city on the island of Holy Mary had been rebuilt by the brothers with great labor and expense, it happened that the Prussians, with an immense army, having laid waste the land of Culm, advanced to the castle of Belichow, belonging to a certain nobleman of Pomesania called Jonis son of Sarginus, situated above the Osa. From that castle Brother Conrad the Swabian went out from Elbing with many men-at-arms, and he engaged them in a joust, in which many on both sides were wounded.

The Second Destruction of Insula Sancte Marie

The Prussians lay a long and harsh assault on the city of the island of Holy Mary, destroying it utterly again, killing, capturing, or scattering its defenders, and bringing great disgrace upon sacred images, vestments, and church sacraments.

When this was done they approached the city on the island of Holy Mary, and after a long and harsh assault they destroyed it utterly again; some fled to the castle, others who had defended themselves in a certain fortress of the city were saved, while the rest were captured or killed. In these two battles with the Prussians great disgrace was brought upon the images of the saints, upon sacred vestments, and upon other things dedicated to the worship of God and to the sacraments of the church.
