Chapter 13ChrP.3.13

The Cross Granted for Prussia and Livonia

Master Hermann of Salza secures from the pope the preaching of the cross for Prussia and Livonia, along with indulgences equal to those granted to pilgrims bound for Jerusalem.

Brother Hermann of Salza, the master general, a prudent and thoroughly cautious man, at the very time when the aforementioned events were unfolding, approached the Lord Pope and, among other petitions, requested and obtained the preaching of the cross in the kingdoms and provinces then assigned by the Apostolic See for the support of the land of Prussia; and the same pope, and afterwards Pope Innocent, granted to my pilgrims visiting Prussia and Livonia privileges and indulgences, just as are granted to those going to Jerusalem.123

Notes

  1. 1The source text shows 'do minum papam' (a split of 'dominum papam') and 'omni bus' (a split of 'omnibus'); the normalized reading treats these as 'dominum papam' and 'omnibus'. Translation follows the corrected reading.
  2. 2'Crux' rendered as 'the cross' in the sense of a crusade indulgence — the preaching of the cross — not the physical object.
  3. 3'mi peregrinis' — 'mi' is uncertain in the source; possibly a dative of 'my' or an abbreviation. Rendered as 'my pilgrims' following the most plausible reading, though this is tentative.
