A Morning Sacrifice of Praise and Protection
The believer offers a morning prayer of thanksgiving for past protection and petitions God for safety against spiritual and physical harm throughout the day.
O immortal, gracious God! Because you commanded your people in the Law to offer you a burnt offering every morning—to praise you with it and to thank you for your gracious protection—I now also bring you the sacrifice of praise (the fruit of my lips). I praise your holy name because, through your great grace and mercy, you guarded me this past night from all evil and harm to my body and soul, and kept me with full fatherly care against my adversary, the evil enemy.1 If you hadn't been my shield and help, countless misfortunes would have ruined me, and I wouldn't have been able to rise in good health. Therefore, I rightly thank you for your gracious protection.2 Furthermore, I cry out to you from the depths of my heart, and my prayer comes before you early; I seek you early and ask that you continue to guard me today, along with all that belongs to me, from the craft and power of the devil, from sins, disgrace, and every evil.3 Come to me first in this early hour with your grace, since without you I can do nothing. Help me so that today I may begin all my works in your name in a Christian way and bring them to a blessed completion, to the honor of your divine majesty and for the good of my neighbor.4 Guard my soul, understanding, reason, senses, and thoughts—everything I do and leave undone—so that the wretched devil cannot harm me. Protect me from the plague that destroys at midday; guard me from all my enemies, visible and invisible, so that with their schemes and tricks, their enchantments and poisonings, and all their power and malice, whether secret or open, they cannot injure or harm me.
A Prayer for Purity and Divine Guidance
The prayer shifts focus to the interior life, asking for grace to overcome sinful desires and for the light of Christ to guide the believer's path.
Lord God, Father and Lord of my life, protect me also from unchaste sights, and turn every evil desire away from me. Don't let me fall into gluttony and unchastity, and guard me from a shameless heart. Help me, by your grace, to tear out the eye that would cause me to stumble and cast it away by putting aside the evil and impure desires of my heart.5 Take away from me everything that displeases you and harms me; give me what pleases you and is useful for me, so that I may serve you in true faith. Look upon me, Savior of all the world, with the eyes of your mercy, and enlighten my heart and eyes, so that I may walk in the radiance of your grace that rises over me, and never lose you, the eternal Light. Amen.

O du unsterblicher, gütiger Gott! Weil du deinem Volk im Gesetz geboten, dir alle Morgen ein Brandopfer zu tun, dich damit zu loben und dir zu danken für deinen gnädigen Schutz, so bringe ich dir jetzt auch das Lobopfer, das ist die Frucht meiner Lippen, und preise deinen heiligen Namen, dass du mich durch deine große Gnade und Barmherzigkeit heut diese Nacht vor allem Übel und Schaden an Leib und Seele behütet und wider meinen Widersacher, den bösen Feind, ganz väterlich erhalten hast. Denn wo du nicht mein Schild und Beistand wärest gewesen, so hätte mich unzähliges Unglück verderbet, dass ich nicht gesund hätte mögen aufstehen. Darum danke ich dir je billig für deine gnädige Beschützung. Weiter schreie ich zu dir aus Grund meines Herzens, und mein Gebet kommt früh vor dich; früh suche ich dich und bitte, du wollest mich mit allem, was mir zuständig ist, heut ferner behüten vor der List und Gewalt des Teufels, vor Sünden, Schanden und allem Übel. Komm du mir zuvor in dieser Frühstunde mit deiner Gnade, sintemal ich ohne dich nichts vermag, und hilf, dass ich an diesem Tage alle meine Werke in deinem Namen christlich anfahe und seliglich vollführe, zu Ehren deiner göttlichen Majestät und zu Nutz meines Nächsten. Bewahre meine Seele, Verstand, Vernunft, Sinne und Gedanken, all mein Tun und Lassen, dass der leidige Teufel mir nicht könne schaden. Beschütze mich vor der Seuche, die im Mittag verderbet; behüte mich vor allen meinen Feinden, sichtbaren und unsichtbaren, dass sie mich mit ihren Listen und Tücken, mit Bezaubern und Vergiftungen, mit all ihrer Gewalt und Bosheit heimlich und öffentlich nicht können verletzen noch beschädigen.
Herr Gott Vater und Herr meines Lebens, behüte mich auch vor unzüchtigem Gesichte und wende von mir alle böse Lust. Lass mich nicht in Schlemmen und Unkeuschheit geraten und behüte mich vor unverschämtem Herzen. Hilf, dass ich durch deine Gnade das Auge, so mich ärgern will, ausreiße und von mir werfe durch Ablegung böser und unreiner Begierden des Herzens. Nimm von mir hinweg alles, was dir missfällt und mir schädlich ist; gib mir, was dir wohlgefällt und mir nützlich ist, auf dass ich dir in wahrem Glauben diene. Siehe mich an, du Heiland aller Welt, mit den Augen deiner Barmherzigkeit und erleuchte mein Herz und Augen, dass ich wandele in dem Glanz deiner Gnaden, so über mir aufgehet, auf dass ich dich, das ewige Licht, nimmermehr verliere.
