Chapter 22Haberm.1.22

Gebet nach der Kommunion

Gratitude for Sacramental Grace

The believer offers heartfelt thanks for the cleansing and restoration received through the Body and Blood of Christ.

Lord Jesus Christ, I praise and thank you from my heart for washing me, a poor sinner, clean of my wrongdoing once again; for feeding me and giving me drink with your true Body and Blood for the true and sure washing and forgiveness of all my sins; for taking me back as a soiled child into the fatherly arms of your grace and mercy after such cleansing; and for presenting me before your Father blameless, pure, and without stain.

A Petition for Sanctification and Love

The prayer shifts to a request for the Holy Spirit to enable a life of gratitude, neighborly love, and forgiveness.

I ask you with all my heart and strength that, beyond the kindness you have already shown, you would continue to do this in abundance and graciously grant me your grace through the working of the Holy Spirit, so that I may recognize this great goodness and mercy of yours, receive it with gratitude, and praise and exalt you from my heart for the rest of my life.1 Work and bring about in me also through your Holy Spirit that I may forgive my neighbor from the heart everything he does against me, just as you, Lord, have fully pardoned and forgiven me all my great and many wrongdoings—yes, have completely blotted them out and will never remember them again; that I may also love my neighbor and show him from the heart every good thing, just as you, Lord, have done more for me than I can thank you for; so that you, kind and faithful God, may be praised and exalted in us together with your Father and the Holy Spirit forever.2 Amen.

Read the original Latin

Amen.

Scripture echoes

  1. 1John.1.7;Rev.1.5But if we walk in the light, as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. Rev.1.5 — and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth — to him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood,
  2. Eph.5.27;Col.1.22so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, so that she might be holy and blameless. Col.1.22 — now he has reconciled you in the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him
  3. Matt.6.12;Eph.4.32And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. Eph.4.32 — Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ forgave you.
  4. Isa.43.25;Heb.8.12I, I am the one who blots out your transgressions for my sake, and your sins I will not remember. Heb.8.12 — for I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins I will remember no more.

Notes

  1. 1„nach deiner Wohltat noch zum Überfluss das dazu tun“ rendered as further gift beyond the kindness already shown (Communion/forgiveness), not as replacing that gift.
  2. 2„frommer und getreuer Gott“ rendered „kind and faithful God“ (devotional piety + fidelity), not modern-moral „pious“ alone.
