A Prayer for the Comfort of Absolution
The petitioner invokes Christ's authority in the office of the keys to seek release from sin through the ministry of confession.
Lord Jesus Christ, my Redeemer! You have left to your dear Church here on earth, and to its faithful servants, the holy office of the keys, with the attached promise that whatever they loose or bind by its power shall also be loosed and bound in heaven. For such means rich in grace I give you eternal praise, honor, and glory, and from the depths of my heart I ask—because I, as a poor, bound sinner, need this comforting key of release, and so that I may not be held under the chains of hell's jailer—that you would let that same key come to me with comfort through my Christian confessor, and graciously free me from all my sins for the sake of your blood and death, and also grant me your Holy Spirit, so that I may receive holy Absolution in true repentance and undoubting confidence, with good resolve, brotherly love, and gratitude, and at last be eternally saved.1 Amen.

Herr Jesu Christe, mein Erlöser! Du hast deiner lieben Kirche hier auf Erden und deren getreuen Dienern das heilige Amt der Schlüssel hinterlassen mit angehefter Verheißung, was sie in Kraft derselben lösen oder binden werden, das soll auch im Himmel gelöst und gebunden sein, für solche gnadenreiche Mittel sage ich dir ewiges Lob, Ehr und Preis, und bitte von Grund meines Herzens, weil ich als ein armer, gebundener Sünder dieses tröstlichen Löseschlüssels bedürftig, und damit ich nicht unter den Fesseln des höllischen Kerkermeisters gehalten werde, du wollest mir denselbigen durch meinen christlichen Beichtvater tröstlich widerfahren lassen, und mich von allen meinen Sünden, um deines Blutes und Todes willen, gnädig entbinden, daneben mir deinen Heiligen Geist verleihen, dass ich die heilige Absolution in rechter Buße und ungezweifelter Zuversicht, gutem Vorsatz, brüderlicher Liebe und Dankbarkeit fasse, und endlich ewig selig werde. Amen.
