The Meaning of Daily Bread
The fourth petition of the Lord's Prayer encompasses all physical needs provided by God's grace.
The fourth petition: what it means to ask for our daily bread. Minister: Let's move on to the second part. What do you mean by the daily bread you ask for? S: In general, everything our body needs in its want—not only food and clothing, but everything God knows is good for us so that we can eat our bread in peace.
Labor and Divine Providence
While we work for our living, it is God's blessing alone that sustains us and makes our labor fruitful.
God blesses our labor. M: How can you ask God to provide your food, when he commands us to earn it through the work of our hands? E: Although we must work to live, it isn't our labor, skill, or diligence that feeds us, but only God's blessing, which rests on our hands and our work to make them prosper.1 Furthermore, we must understand that it isn't the food itself that nourishes us, even when we have it readily available, but the power of the Lord, who uses it only as an instrument (Deuteronomy 8:3, 17).234
The Gift of Provision
We call bread 'ours' because it is a gift of God's goodness, which also teaches us to seek only what is gained through legitimate means.
277. Master: Why do you call it yours, when you are asking for it to be given to you? E: It is by God's goodness that it is made ours, even though it is not owed to us at all. And also by this we are warned not to desire another person's bread, but only the bread we will have gained by legitimate means, according to God's ordinance.
Contentment and Daily Dependence
Asking for bread 'daily' teaches us moderation and constant dependence on God, regardless of our current wealth.
Daily bread.✦ Minister: Why do you say “daily” and “today”? E: That is to teach us to be content and not to crave more than our need requires. 279. M: Since this prayer is common to everyone, how can the rich, who have provision and abundance of goods for a long time, ask for just one day?✦ E: Both rich and poor must understand that everything they have can do them no good at all, except insofar as the Lord gives them the use of it and, by his grace, makes it profitable for us. So even when we possess things, we have nothing, except to the extent that he gives them to us.

La quatrième requête : que c'est que demander notre pain quotidien 275. M : Venons à la seconde partie. Qu'entends-tu par le pain quotidien que tu demandes? E : Généralement tout ce qui fait besoin à l'indigence de notre corps, non seulement quant à la nourriture et vêture, mais tout ce que Dieu connaît nous être expédient à ce que puissions manger notre pain en paix.
Dieu bénit le labeur 276. M : Comment demandes-tu à Dieu qu'il te donne ta nourriture, vu qu'il nous commande de la gagner au travail de nos mains? E : Combien qu'il nous faille travailler pour vivre, toutefois si est-ce que notre labeur, industrie et diligence ne nous nourrissent pas, mais la seule bénédiction de Dieu, laquelle est sur nos mains et notre labeur pour le faire prospérer. Et davantage, il nous faut entendre que ce ne sont pas les viandes qui nous nourrissent, encore que nous les ayons à commandement, mais la vertu du Seigneur qui use d'icelles comme d'instrument, tant seulement (Deutéronome 8:3, 17).
277. M : Pourquoi l'appelles-tu tien, puisque tu demandes qu'il te soit donné? E : C'est par la bonté de Dieu qu'il est fait nôtre, encore qu'il ne nous soit point dû. Et aussi par cela nous sommes avertis de ne désirer le pain d'autrui, mais celui que nous aurons acquis par moyen légitime, selon l'ordonnance de Dieu.
Pain quotidien 278. M : Pourquoi dis-tu « quotidien » et « aujourd'hui »? E : Cela est pour nous apprendre d'avoir contentement et ne point appéter plus que notre nécessité requiert.
279. M : Vu que cette prière est commune à tous, comment les riches, qui ont provision et abondance de biens pour longtemps, peuvent-ils demander pour un jour? E : Il faut que tant riches que pauvres entendent que tout ce qu'ils ont ne leur peut de rien profiter, sinon en tant que le Seigneur leur en donne l'usage et fait par sa grâce qu'il nous soit profitable. Ainsi en ayant, nous n'avons rien, sinon d'autant qu'il le nous donne.
