Hallowing the Name of God
The first petition of the Lord's Prayer focuses on the desire for God's glory to be rightly acknowledged and manifested in all his works.
First petition: how the name of God is hallowed.✦ Master: Now explain the first petition. C: The Name of God is his renown, by which he is celebrated among people.1 So we desire that his glory be exalted everywhere and in all things. 267. Master: Do you mean that it can grow or diminish?2 S: Not in itself.3 But it means that it should be made known as it ought to be, and that whatever God does, all his works should appear as glorious as they are, so that in every way he is glorified.
The Coming of God's Kingdom
The second petition concerns the expansion of God's rule through the growth of the faithful and the eventual total defeat of darkness at the final judgment.
The second petition: where the Kingdom of God lies.✦ Master: In the second petition, what do you mean by “the Kingdom of God”? E: It consists mainly of two points. It is to lead his own and govern them by his Spirit; and conversely, to cast down and confound the reprobate who refuse to submit to his rule, so that it may clearly appear that no power can resist his. Christ's Kingdom Master: How do you pray for this Kingdom to come?✦ E: It is that day by day the Lord multiplies the number of his faithful people; that day by day he increases his graces upon them until he has filled them completely; that he also makes his truth clearer and clearer; that he makes his justice known, by which Satan and the darkness of his kingdom may be confounded; and that all iniquity may be destroyed and abolished.4 The Perfection of Christ's Kingdom 270. Master: Isn't this already happening now? E: Yes, it is—in part.5 But we desire that it keep growing and advancing continually until it finally reaches its perfection, which will be on the day of judgment, when God alone will be exalted and every creature humbled under his greatness; indeed, he will be all in all (1 Corinthians 15:28).✦

Première requête : comment le Nom de Dieu est sanctifié 266. M : Expose maintenant la première demande. E : Le Nom de Dieu est sa renommée, de laquelle il est célébré entre les hommes. Nous désirons donc que sa gloire soit exaltée par tout et en toutes choses.
267. M : Entends-tu qu'elle puisse croître ou diminuer? E : Non pas en soi-même. Mais c'est-à-dire qu'elle soit manifestée comme elle doit, et quelque chose que Dieu fasse, que toutes ses Oeuvres apparaissent glorieuses comme elles sont, tellement qu'en toutes sortes il soit glorifié.
La deuxième requête : où gît le Règne de Dieu 268. M : En la seconde requête, qu'entends-tu par « le Règne de Dieu »? E : Il consiste principalement en deux points. C'est de conduire les siens et gouverner par son Esprit ; au contraire, d'abîmer et confondre les réprouvés, qui ne se veulent rendre sujets à sa domination, afin que clairement il apparaisse qu'il n'y a nulle puissance qui puisse résister à la sienne.
Règne de Christ 269. M : Comment pries-tu que ce Règne advienne? E : C'est que de jour en jour le Seigneur multiplie le nombre de ses fidèles, qu'il augmente de jour en jour ses grâces sur eux jusqu'à ce qu'il les ait du tout remplis, qu'il éclaircisse aussi de plus en plus sa vérité, qu'il manifeste sa justice, dont Satan et les ténèbres de son règne soient confondus, et que toute iniquité soit détruite et abolie.
Perfection du Règne de Christ 270. M : Cela ne se fait-il pas dès à présent? E : Si fait bien, en partie. Mais nous désirons que continuellement il croisse et soit avancé jusqu'à ce qu'il vienne finalement à sa perfection, qui sera au jour du jugement, auquel Dieu sera exalté seul, et toute créature sera humiliée sous sa grandeur ; même il sera tout en toutes choses (1 Corinthiens 15:28).
